New on the blog: Several years ago, Portland Oregon had a similar conversation around “missing middle” to what Asheville is experiencing now. How did it go for them, and what we can learn?

Asheville City Council voted recently on a minor amendment to the city’s zoning code, regarding accessory dwelling units, or ADUs. Why did it turn into a big deal? Read our recap:

A Cool new video from Asheville’s own Urban3 shows why missing middle housing isn’t just good for renters and first-time homebuyers—it’s good for the whole city too.

Asheville City Council is hearing a small “cleanup” amendment to allow more Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in the city. Read our letter to the council here:

[W]hile poverty levels fell in Western North Carolina’s urban areas . . . , they rose in unincorporated Buncombe, Haywood, and Henderson counties, where low-income workers often moved after being forced out of cities by rising rents.

From Portland to Minneapolis to South Bend to Raleigh, missing middle housing has reduced costs for renters and first-time homebuyers. Let’s not delay missing middle for Asheville!

Can ADUs be a bigger part of Asheville’s housing solutions? Yes! Alongside “missing middle” reforms, ADUs have been shown to increase housing supply and decrease displacement pressure. Asheville’s own studies recommend enabling more ADUs!

Asheville passed some significant pro-housing reforms in the spring. Here’s some reasons why we shouldn’t stop there.

Asheville already has the plans to make housing more affordable with modest incremental neighborhood infill.

Help us send a message: time to put the plans to use!
