I 100% support Joel MacManus’ open letter to you and would add that Critic is one of the most important, helpful, visible, tangible, and loved services you deliver to your students. Student journalism plays an important part in campus life — holding you as an elected body accountable, keeping an eye on the university, through the Aotearoa Student Press Association highlighting issues across tertiary education, just keeping people in the know about what is happening while they study and bringing a sense of community to a bunch of weirdo losers who call themselves ’student journalists’. Don’t shoot yourselves in the foot because you’re sad they wrote mean things about you when you did stupid things. The easiest way for people to not write mean things about you is to not do stupid things — like defund Critic — in the first place. Support student journalism. Support an informed student body.
