I'm on team sinkhole. Come on, sinkhole, you can do it.

Ah, found a paper on just this! These isolators shield SHERLOC from the percussion of the drill, compensate for the extreme thermal range, and compliance during installation (among other things). Paper found in the link therein ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20...
This reverse engineering effort is so hardcore. bsky.app/profile/tube... π²
Ahh. "Isolators" was the magic search phrase.
Any MechE rover heads out there know what went into the design of these mechanical interfaces to SHERLOC on Perserverance? It's like a gas strut with two degrees of compliance at both ends. Is this just a combination of thermal expansion, shock, assembly compliance? Why solid thin-fin vs a joint?
Looking east towards Lone Pine. Probably around the 3800 meter mark. I think that is Consultation Lake (it's been a minute!). This one is so blown out it has its own vignette.
That delicious cragginess on the way over toward Mt. Whitney.
Towers of cold icy granite in Cirque of the Towers. I recall feeling rather underdressed in a way only a teenager's planning could manage.
I found a grip of negatives of photos I shot as a teenager. It was this weird camera that shot wide on 35mm. The exposures are a bonkers 14x37mm. Lots of knicks in the negatives. The lens wasn't great and there was no shutter speed control. I think this is heading into the Cirque of the Towers.
Chotiner has really been doing the work the last few years. Even when the situation is terrible (as with this one), reading this type of sober interview/accounting feels almost like a salve in comparison to the general media/information environment.

A skeletal figure floats off the ground, wrapped in a cape made of autumn leaves. It wields a scythe adorned with a harvest of gourds.

a sketch with digital color of a woman resting her head on her arms on top of a open book. Tangled branches envelope her, and a goblin pokes its head over the table.
THIS ANIMATION IS SO INSANE

Trump and Vance have repeatedly claimed that Zelensky has not been sufficiently grateful for U.S. support throughout the war.
We compiled instances where Zelensky has publicly expressed gratitude to the U.S., its people, and its leadership for being Ukraineβs largest supporter.
fun piece about an anonymous font you see everywhere aresluna.org/the-hardest-... tbh I did not read every one of the 6,100 words but I appreciate that @aresluna.org wrote them all
My review of Caves of Qud, based solely on phrases my partner mutters to themself while playing, is that it's effectively a Pliny the Elder simulator. They just hissed, "I believe honey has something to do with healing, but I don't know what it is" and then starting inspecting a pig
The DSKY Moonwatch is a wristwatch thatβs a shrunk-down replica of the Apollo Guidance Computer interface that the Apollo astronauts used to maneuver their spacecraft to the Moon and back. So nerdy! [kottke.org]
I did it again!
