Context: I’ve been a manager or senior manager for 11 years. I’ve never had the final say on anything.
But when I was running my own shop, I had to make every decision and deal with the consequences of that.
The experience of having worked across that spectrum helps me every day.
I’ve been thinking about this story a lot. One of the biggest challenges for journalists transitioning from an individual contributor role to management is the lack of training. Being a good journalist isn’t enough. That’s not dissimilar from going from employee to owner, whatever the context.
