Close-up of oak branches in late autumn, with scattered rust-orange and golden-brown leaves clinging to otherwise bare twigs, set against a misty Welsh valley of forested hills receding into a pale grey-blue overcast sky. Shot on medium format film.

Here's my suggestions for wildlife to put on British banknotes

Β£5 - a pigeon with one foot

Β£10 - foxes. Shagging by the bins.

Β£20 - five seagulls eating a dropped kebab

Β£50 - a dead badger by the side of a road

A film photograph shot across a still loch in winter, looking toward a large Scottish baronial mansion or country house on the opposite shore. The grand grey stone building, with its multiple turrets, crow-stepped gables, and dormer windows, sits nestled among bare deciduous trees whose skeletal branches carry a warm mauve-pink cast typical of Kodak Ektar or similar colour negative film in cool light. The foreground shows a snow-dusted bank with patches of frost-bleached grass and russet dead vegetation. The loch’s calm surface mirrors the pale sky, the trees, and the faint outline of the house. Behind the estate, dense mixed woodland β€” dark evergreen conifers interspersed with bare broadleaf trees in soft lavender-brown β€” rises steeply up the hillside, with wisps of low cloud or mist clinging to the upper slopes. The overall palette is muted and cool, dominated by dusty pinks, purples, and blue-greens, lending the scene a quiet, painterly melancholy characteristic of a Scottish winter.

A narrow single-track road curves away into the distance along the lower flank of a steep Welsh hillside in late autumn. A wooden post-and-wire fence runs parallel to the road, punctuated by bare-branched trees still holding clusters of red berries β€” likely rowan or hawthorn. The hillside above is a patchwork of russet bracken and pale gold grass, while the rounded summits of the mountains beyond are cast in deep shadow under a flat, overcast sky. Further ridgelines recede into soft grey mist in the background. The square medium format frame and rich, saturated rendering of the reds and greens suggest film, possibly Kodak Ektar 100.

Two firefighters resting, sitting on the plinth of the "Citizen Firefighter" statue.

Quite an image on the BBC live page (www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cd...; no photographer credited).

Sounds as if they've saved the station and the hotel, and more importantly, without loss of life.

Citizens; heroes.

A long-exposure film photograph of a wide, cascading waterfall tumbling diagonally across dark wet rocks in late autumn Wales. The silky, motion-blurred white water flows from upper left to lower right, broken by mossy boulders and clumps of pale golden rushes. To the right, a bare deciduous woodland β€” likely sessile oaks β€” fills the hillside, their dark gnarled branches leafless against a pale overcast sky, with deep russet bracken carpeting the ground beneath them. The square medium format frame gives the scene a painterly, timeless quality.

A medium format film photograph of a coastal scene on Anglesey, Wales. In the foreground, a rocky limestone shore at low tide reveals weathered, layered rock formations with shallow tidal pools reflecting the overcast sky. The calm grey-blue sea stretches across the middle ground. To the left of centre, a small uninhabited island rises from the water β€” a rounded, grass-topped hill with dark exposed cliffs and a rocky causeway extending to one side. To its right stands a red navigation buoy or beacon marker. The sky is pale and heavily overcast with soft, diffuse light. The muted, cool palette and fine grain are characteristic of colour negative film shot on medium format.

A Scottish Highland landscape shot on Kodak Aerochrome infrared film, rendering all vegetation in vivid magenta and deep crimson tones. In the foreground, a scatter of lichen-covered granite boulders sits among a dense tangle of bracken and low vegetation glowing in hot pink and burgundy. A treeline of Scots pines rises dramatically behind, their silhouettes dark against the infrared-lit canopy. Beyond them, a rounded moorland hill recedes into the middle distance, rendered in warm rose-brown. The sky above is a pale chartreuse-yellow β€” the characteristic infrared sky tone β€” fading to cream at the horizon, with a faint vignette darkening the upper corners. The square format and film grain give the image a tactile, otherworldly quality.

So far my strategy for taking pictures of our cats is to sit very quietly, on my phone, pretending not to care, and when they strike a pose for a second, quickly launch camera and snap. Nothing else seems to be working.

Ruins of a roofless slate-built structure reclaimed by woodland, photographed on medium format film. Thick courses of dark grey slate form partially collapsed walls, heavily colonised by vivid green moss and ivy. Slender trees with moss-covered bark grow directly among and through the ruins, their bare winter branches spreading across the upper frame. Scattered slate fragments and dead leaves cover the ground. The overall palette is cool and muted, with the saturated greens of the moss providing strong contrast against the dark stone and pale overcast sky visible through the canopy.

Scattered clouds drift across a muted purple-grey sky above the open sea.

An eye-level, slightly upward-facing photograph captures a natural stone path winding between moss-covered rock formations and rugged tree trunks in a forest setting.
In the foreground, large, moss-draped boulders flank the narrow trail. Beyond the rocks, the path continues upward, framed by the gnarled, twisting branches of bare trees that spread across the upper portion of the frame. Through these interlocking branches, a pale, hazy light suggests a body of water or sky in the distance. The overall scene feels quiet, textured, and atmospheric.

A bare rowan tree laden with clusters of bright red berries stands in sharp focus against a softly blurred Scottish Highland landscape. The leafless grey branches contrast vividly with the vivid red berries, while the background reveals an expanse of russet and amber moorland, a distant white cottage, and hazy hills receding into an overcast sky. Mossy rocks and heather-covered ground surround the base of the tree in the foreground.
