Itching mice help manage skin conditions Researchers in Belgium have discovered, in mice, a biological mechanism that regulates itching, providing a basis for potential new treatments for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

This idea resonated throughout the day, with many scientists sharing case studies demonstrating how integrating in vitro NAMs with in vivo research can refine animal use while strengthening scientific rigour and the translational relevance of research.

One key takeaway was that NAMs should not be treated as full replacements for animal research, but rather as complementary approaches that improve experimental design, reduce variability, and support animal welfare and the 3Rs.

Nuno’s talk, at the opening of the meeting, highlighted the importance of NAMs in advancing science, while cautioning that many research fields do not yet have robust alternatives available.
