I feel like a lot of make-your-own-difficulty stuff is in part driven by devs being insecure about their own difficulty balancing. Cuz if you give players all these opt-out features, if a difficulty mode's poorly balanced then it's not on the devs, it's on the players for not using OP stuff

If I watch intermediate to high level play and I see that there are things that rarely happen. I just won’t spend much time practicing it

It can be depending on the community. But it was far more ubiquitous back in the day lol

“Wait you’re black?” was very much a thing that was said if you went long enough without telling anyone lmao.

There was a time on the internet where, in nerdy communities, it was a surprise if you revealed that you were black

Similar to revealing that you were a woman but to a lesser extent

And even WHEN they offer something unique or novel. It might not even translate to sales or whatever (e.g. Gravity Rush)

They matter, but the way people talk about them as this make or break thing feels so ahistorical to me lol

Exclusives matter when the exclusives are offering something that is actually unique or novelty

If they aren’t, then they are just glorified third party in terms of how much they move the needle
