I think it's a metaphor about polishing the rough edges, not that it has to seek uniformity or perfection. The tricky thing is discovering what that "polished, refined" shape looks like, because that usually reveals itself through the craft. Yet, making a "quick rough" version ASAP is crucial.

I remember watching this as a kid. It was scary when Travolta melted in the dancefloor in some sort of liquid-metal-robot, but still so good. Sometimes find myself singing the main theme song "you're the one that I want" from that movie. Great stuff.
