Sorry to get radical but I don’t think it’s my job or yours to embrace, accept, understand - and certainly not to use - the thing being sold to us as AI. I don’t like any part of it, so I won’t. I’m missing out? Good, that’s what I want. You’re worried about me missing out? That’s fuckin weird, man.

Remember the last time someone tried to sell you something and you said no? And then the salesperson (and their other customers) called you reactionary and then your dean said you were a Luddite. This is what you the AI discourse feels like to me.

Revisiting Good Old-Fashioned Artificial Intelligence (GOFAI) In Defense of Bounded, Non-Machine Learning AI

The spirit gripped me today and moved me to write this essay on "good old fashioned artificial intelligence," which I position as opposite to the ethically compromised Machine Learning-based AI of today. I don't think people will like what I have to say.

The legitimately innovative thing about AI is that it is a completely bottomless pit. It's swallowed up:

- all energy sources
- all our data
- all investment dollars
- all new jobs
- all capex
- all attention
- and now, all hardware components

with absolutely no end in sight. Nothing will satisfy.

Unpacking My Statement on Generative AI Guest post by Nathaniel Rivers, English, Saint Louis University My syllabus statement on generative AI (as opposed to AI writ large) remains a work in process as it responds to an emerging phenomen…

This piece by @sophist.monster is the best thing I've read on generative AI to date. I need to read it again already. 1/X

The (pedagogical) question of how does one ethically engage AI (in the classroom) is sort of like asking how does one ethically engage child labor or burning styrofoam (in the classroom).

Absolutely surreal to have lived through the Napster days and watched as the titans of industry moved hell and high water to lock down any possible chance that someone's song might get swapped online without giving the studios a cut and now those same people are just like "well we gotta steal music"

There are certain types of tech critics who avoid any mention of racism, sexism, colonialism, genocide & eugenics. If they do it is to attack those of us who expose these threads.

Watch out for those discussing "polarization" rather than "white supremacy"

Or "racial tensions" rather than racism 🙄

Schools use AI to monitor kids, but investigation finds risks Schools are turning to AI-powered surveillance technology to monitor students on school-issued devices like laptops and tablets

I wrote about Gaggle in Privacy Is Power. It's sad that it's still in business, surveilling some 6 million students. #Surveillance doesn't solve social problems. It teaches children that rights are worthless. And it is a security risk in itself
