Remember the last time someone tried to sell you something and you said no? And then the salesperson (and their other customers) called you reactionary and then your dean said you were a Luddite. This is what you the AI discourse feels like to me.
The spirit gripped me today and moved me to write this essay on "good old fashioned artificial intelligence," which I position as opposite to the ethically compromised Machine Learning-based AI of today. I don't think people will like what I have to say.

The legitimately innovative thing about AI is that it is a completely bottomless pit. It's swallowed up:
- all energy sources
- all our data
- all investment dollars
- all new jobs
- all capex
- all attention
- and now, all hardware components
with absolutely no end in sight. Nothing will satisfy.

The (pedagogical) question of how does one ethically engage AI (in the classroom) is sort of like asking how does one ethically engage child labor or burning styrofoam (in the classroom).
Absolutely surreal to have lived through the Napster days and watched as the titans of industry moved hell and high water to lock down any possible chance that someone's song might get swapped online without giving the studios a cut and now those same people are just like "well we gotta steal music"
