44 years ago on June 19th, 1982, Vincent Chin was beaten to death by two men who, when found guilty, were sentenced only to probation. For Asian Americans, this was a devastating moment. Reverend Jesse Jackson made a point to stand with us when few others did.

The Trump regime claims that if we get immigrants out of subsidized housing, those units will go to help solve our housing crisis. This isn’t true, but the words are in the right order to make people who should know better take them at face value.

Reverend James Lawson’s unshakeable principles should inspire us all to fight inequality and to fight for a world we are proud to share with our neighbors.

As we honor him in memory, let us honor him in action.

While he lived in Los Angeles, he co-founded Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE) and stood with labor unions and marginalized communities. He served as a visiting scholar teaching a semester-long class on nonviolence at CSUN until his death.

Reverend Lawson moved to Los Angeles in 1974 and led the congregation at Holman United Methodist until 1999, but he never stepped away from fighting for civil rights and social justice. He passed on June 9, 2024, at 94 years of age.

Reverend James Lawson was a central figure in the Civil Rights Movement, helping to develop strategies of nonviolent resistance that led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, including the March on Washington and the Freedom Riders.

While at Vanderbilt, Rev. Lawson trained future civil rights leaders like John Lewis and Diane Nash in nonviolent resistance. After launching a campaign of sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in Nashville in 1960, he was expelled from Vanderbilt.

But that didn’t stop the Reverend.

Rev. James Lawson was studying Divinity at Vanderbilt University when he began teaching nonviolence training workshops for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

He moved there at the suggestion of his friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, whom he met as a grad student at Oberlin in 1957.

We need more housing across Los Angeles. As mayor, I will faithfully implement SB79’s community protections while ensuring we are increasing our housing supply.

Every Angeleno deserves a safe and affordable home, and SB79 is one of the many pathways that will make this a reality.

As we look to build a better future, we must remember the contributions of Geronimo Pratt & others like him who fought for a more equitable society in the face of violent opposition from an administration fanatically devoted to the status quo.
