To put this in context, when I did my annual training in January, the election office was predicting around 7 percent turnout. 20 percent for a special election is bonkers.

Also, those results translate to about 81% no vs 19% yes.

To the founders of Wichita Forward: I hope the L hurts so much you never enter politics again.

We had 20 percent turnout for a special election, *and* we gave Wichita CEOs an electoral smackdown. Their sales tax proposal got rejected by a full 80–20 vote. They spent months lying to voters and dreaming up slush funds and making empty promises, and they got exactly what they deserved.

The world is burning down around us but this picture soothes me.

COVID killed two of my grandparents. I had to say goodbye to my grandpa over the phone. I cried, took a sec to calm down, and went right back to serving coffees. I never had the chance to say goodbye to my grandma. I missed both funerals.

I’ve just accepted that I’ll never have a chance to grieve.

Also, not being allowed to feel and acknowledge the collective trauma we experienced from the pandemic has definitely pushed some of us off the deep end.

Capitalism demanded we return to “normal” and get right back to work. No time to grieve or think about if we even wanted “normal” anymore.

Kitty (yes, the one in my profile pic) had a rough evening. She was straining in her litter box and then threw up several times. She’s since used her box and kept down food and water, and she’s been zooming across the house. Still, I can’t sleep for fear she’ll get sick and cry for me again.

Tell me how a woman dies of sepsis. Tell me how a woman bleeds to death. Tell me about the women whose periods are so heavy they faint from blood loss every month. Tell me about the pregnant women with adhesions from untreated endometriosis, about the risks they and their babies face.

Just once, I’d like someone to counter this tactic with stories of what happens when women can’t access the care they need.

The American Experience in 2026 is seeing several SUVs with tinted windows driving around a shopping center (which you know is frequented by BIPOC shoppers) and being convinced every single one is full of ICE agents.
