I was laid off at The Washington Post today after nearly 11 years. It was such an honor to work in that newsroom and be there for so many historic moments. I interacted with some of the smartest people in the business and absorbed as much as I could from many amazing journalists. I may have more to say about my time at The Post on another day. However, this moment right now starts a new chapter for me. Time to move forward.

BTW here’s a photo of one of the walls of that exhibit when we were visiting Philly in 2024. I took my son there, showed him the images and told him how important it is to learn and understand our history. Not just to good stuff — all of it.

The slavery exhibits at the President’s House have been removed following Trump administration push President Donald Trump and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum ordered content at national parks that “inappropriately disparage” the U.S. to be reviewed and potentially removed.

Today I saw the ribbon cutting of Yeleen Beauty Makerspace. It’s a manufacturing facility in Ward 7 from the mind of Rahama Wright, founder of Shea Yeleen. She sources shea butter from Ghana and I’ve been following her for a story about how this DC business is affected by tariffs. Stay tuned.

She’s the first female boxer in her club. She’s also in middle school. Thirteen-year-old Andrea Girón is one of the few girls who train at a boxing club in Seven Corners, Virginia. She competed in her first official bout, becoming the first female to fight for the club.

These were being given out at a Metro station this morning

While I was in Columbia Heights, I heard someone shout that ICE was at 14th and Perry Street. So I walked up and caught the end of a scene there. Two women told me a young black male had been detained. This type of reaction has been showing up a lot on social media in the past couple weeks.

I saw residents in Columbia Heights tonight meet at an intersection at exactly 8:00 p.m. to bang on pots and pans as a form of protest. Just days earlier, they witnessed two people being detained by authorities.

They took 2 people off the bus. Couldn’t hear what they were removed for. But you could definitely feel the tension among everyone.

Some of the same authorities I saw on social days ago are back at RI Metro station. That video showed some vitriolic responses from people at the station. Definitely seems like this is a location they’ll return to. I’ve seen little here beyond fair dodging in my years commuting to/from work.
