And thereβs me worried about learning to crochet a granny square for grannylifecrochet.com
Still time to join the Granny Life community math/art project at www.grannylifecrochet.com !
My job is assembly, so today I am learning about braided fishing wire and how to tie fishing nets. Hoping to incorporate a strong net grid into the project. It's going to weigh about 15-20 pounds!
If you don't want to wade through my blog post - here's the website for the project www.grannylifecrochet.com/home - if you can choose and create a granny square in the next month or so there's still time to join in!
NEW: Questions in Dataviz: Is it time to embrace Granny Life?
Created by @mathgrrl.com - a geometrical mathematically-generated 10x10 grid physical dataviz, to be displayed in a mathematical art exhibition in Paris next year. Still time for all to take part!

Two alerts for me - I mustβve got yours.
Yep - I got the bonus second one (nobody else in the house did)
Shitty map from the US Department of War website claiming the military has 4800 sites in over 160 countries but the placements are laughably wrong - for example a bunch are in Russia, Venezuela, Iran, and China. Yellow circles highlight where the dots are clearly copy pasted.
When I have to randomly put a bunch of dots on a map, I too copy paste clusters and rotate them around to make it look like they are actually different
A question for my German, Spanish and French friends on here:
How to you refer to the term AI? Do people in French and Spanish refer to it as IA? And in German as KI?
Or is it a global term known as AI pretty much everywhere?
Thanks / Merci / Danke / Gracias!
What were the chances of that? - I met the guy who sold me the @datavandals.bsky.social T-shirt right here in Vienna!
Great to catch up with @jasonforrest.bsky.social as part of @csh.ac.atβs Visualising Complexity workshop - so many great people are here collaborating on fun visualisation projects
Right! You can get the correct slice for β¬20 extra β¦
Brace yourself - hereβs dataviz @ryanairofficial.bsky.social style!
Looking forward to a week of fun complex dataviz in Vienna! π¦πΉ
My latest article for @datavizsociety.bsky.socialβs Nightingale magazine is out now.
Check out my interview with Angelica Lo Duca, author of βBecome a Great Data Storytellerβ - we discuss heroes, sidekicks, minions and more, along with the inevitable growth of AI β¦
Thanks to everyone at the Illustrating Mathematics week at ICERM who made Granny Life squares this week! Almost 20 now completed!!

Two progress bars, the first showing that 60 of 100 squares are either claimed or completed, and the second showing the 6 of 100 squares have been completed
Granny Life Progress Report! Out of 100 squares needed, 6 are completed and 54 more are claimed and in progress!
Still 40 squares left to claim if you would like to join the cellular automata community crochet math/art project at www.grannylifecrochet.com

Sadly I canβt make it this year but a great deal just got better!
Aha - yes that genuinely does make sense, thanks @kevinwee.bsky.social!
Math nerds and crafty geeks! You are invited to crochet a granny square based on a cellular automaton for the Granny Life project at www.grannylifecrochet.com.
Your work could end up in an art exhibit in Paris! There are plenty of motifs still available to claim :)

I've signed up for @mathgrrl.com 's amazing #grannylifecrochet project at www.grannylifecrochet.com. I'm not a granny and I've never crocheted but this looks like a great opportunity to take part in mass participation maths algorithm based art. What's not to like?
Squares still available!π«π·π§Ά

An order 5 hitomezashi snowflake created using Tableau (includes snowflakes of order 1,2,3 within)
NEW: Questions in Dataviz: What is a Hitomezashi Snowflake?
questionsindataviz.com/2025/07/25/w...
Inspired by @mathskath.bsky.social - looking at encoding data as hitomezashi stitching (steganocoding) and creating digital equivalents, before diving into the mathematics of snowflakes.
Ah yes - makes sense!
Also I noticed that the order 3,4 and 5 Fibonacci snowflakes have snowflakes of order 1,2 and 3 respectively in the centre. I wonder if order n always have snowflakes order n-2 in the centre when they're generated via hitomezashi. It would make a kind of Fibonacci sense?
Hitomezashi pattern generated from the name "Neil Richards" in morse code
I started trying to generate hitomezashi using data (e.g. converting names to binary to generate patterns) but my friend Annabelle Rincon has already done this brilliantly: public.tableau.com/app/profile/...
It didn't stop me trying the process myself by converting my name into Morse Code though!
