90 minutes after I canceled my Nitro sub, Discord marketing sends a promo about gifting Nitro. Marketing should have read the room and paused their campaign.

I doubt I'll be off their platform in the short term, but the new CEO and IPO plans are burning good will at an alarming rate.

Is there a reason I’m not considering when people write “he/she” or “(s)he” instead of just “they”? It’s less characters, friendlier to non-binary genders, and is substantially easier to read just “they”

2025: 719

New low by a few hours.

I’d be willing to bet the time I spent gaming with friends went up though. 2025 was a good year for social gaming.

If you have to pick between Weird Al and weird AI, always pick Weird Al.

2025 has been a pretty damn good one for game releases. Way too many studio closures and game cancellations to call it a good year for the industry. But as gamers, we had an abundance of choice in quality releases this year. Huge year for indies and smaller studios.

Had to file CRTC and CCTS complaints against my former cellular provider. CS agent was so caught up in trying to stop me from reducing my monthly spend by $20 they ended up losing my whole account and might face penalties.

Borderlands 4 thoughts. I think this is a pretty great game so far, possibly the best in franchise. But it has some work to really get there. Inventory/backpack UI is clunky. POV on console is too narrow. Performance issues are still very real.

But the core is great. Decent story. Fun mechanics.

Home - FireSmoke.ca

With the wildfire smoke this season, I’m noticing IQAir is overly optimistic on forecasting AQI. But using it for realtime numbers with firesmoke.ca has been very useful. Sadly we might need better systems for forecasting smoke in the years to come.

It’s only been a couple weeks since my final Amazon order, but it’s actually really nice to shop locally for more things. I’ll inevitably have some trouble finding things in the future. Worth it still.

A screenshot of the lock screen in iOS 26 with default accessibility options. None of text is particularly readable, and for the purposes of this screenshot aren’t relevant. This is showcasing the fragile edge of liquid glass and where it will fail some users. I wouldn’t expect most scenarios to be this contrived to fail, but it illustrates that sharp contrast lines will make difficult for any automated system to correctly render glass containing a single colour icon or text.

If you didn’t notice this a lock screen screenshot from iOS 26 and not just a checkerboard pattern, I wouldn’t be surprised. This is obviously contrived to be a challenge for Liquid Glass, but it failed so predictably.

Maybe I’m paranoid but I can’t bring myself to sharing photos of my home view that aren’t zoomed, cropped and generally devoid of landmarks. It was eye opening watching GeoGuessr players like GeoWizard and Rainbolt, but now AI can do it remarkably well.

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are coming to rescue you.

...and this week our main story is about kidnappings. I'd be in a bit, wouldn't I?

I wish browsers owned things like language selection, light vs dark mode selection (per site, no OS setting), etc… seeing the same things built over and over again that always work slightly different is a chore to learn as a user. I’d take GDPR and cookie consent too, but much bigger lift.

That movement may be too much for someone else. Reduce motion may be the answer there if it is. I’m cautious of the fact it’s first beta, but I’ve seen enough hard to read areas to know it needs adjustment during beta.

I hope by the time is launches, it’s a good experience for you

The early experience I’ve had is generally been around readability. However, I have encountered situations of text switching between white and black depending on scroll position and background content (notifications on Lock Screen image of a cat). Movement has been subtle for me, but 1/2

I genuinely hope Apple is listening to feedback from the design and accessibility experts to make improvements before September. I hope developers take care to not make mistakes that lead to unreadable apps. This could be a great visual language, but it’s fighting against usability as it is today.

Many people have shown examples where glass results in unreadable, if not invisible text in certain situations. This might be solved with computation, but throwing processing power at this isn’t really how I’d want my limited battery to be used.

I’m very conflicted with Liquid Glass after playing around with it for a day. Some elements of it are delightful and beautiful. Others are glaring accessibility concerns, and some places that don’t look quite right. Ultimately I’m fearful how third-party will use it, even if it will be “pretty”.
