You know what the one thing the world definitely doesn't need? A VIDEO podcast from David Brooks.
I have so patiently been waiting for this episode to drop π

"Efforts to restrict mifepristone through junk science and false narratives threaten not only abortion access but the integrity of evidence-based policymaking."
Morning βοΈ
The Senate HELP committee is holding a hearing this AM on the "dangers" of mifepristone. Mife has been safely & effectively used by millions since the FDA approved it in 2000, but we likely won't hear about that today.

Navy blue and white text says, "Guttmacher Research Roundup: Our latest findings on sexual & reproductive health in the US." Below, five bullet points describe findings from recent studies, which can be found at guttmacher.org.
As rigorous science faces the escalating threats of misinformation & false narratives, evidence-based research remains crucial to protecting & advancing bodily autonomy.

Literally by definition "viability" limits ARE gestational limits, as in they limit your ability to get an abortion if you are past a certain gestational duration.
This is shocking news, actually. I thought he was already dead.

100% sympathetic with trying to get nuances across in formats that aren't easily designed for nuance!
My personal pet peeve is saying states don't have bans when they have post-18 weeks bans, when we randomly decided we're ok with banning abortion. But understand not everything can be captured!
Love me a map! But just a friendly reminder, that many of the states marked "legal" have later-gestational bans, which means that for folks later in their pregnancies, abortion is not in fact legal.

Beloved Wisconsinites: I am so sorry.
If you cannot get to Milwaukee for care, shield law providers can help you. If you need in-clinic care, Minnesota and Illinois have got you. I know this makes things so much worse, but I promise, we WILL help you exercise your options.
This is so shameful.
Some personal news:
I've been fired from the Washington Post in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk shooting.
Thread incoming.

Ezra- Your piece on the death of Charlie Kirk was reckless, insulting, condescending, and worst of all, a piece of hagiography. For someone who claims to honor history and context in your work, it reads as if it was written by someone who respects neither of those things.Β What does it mean to practice politics in the "right way"? For whom does a "taste for disagreement" benefit? Certainly not the vulnerable populationsβtrans people, Black women, and moreβwho Kirk routinely targeted with hate speech and calls for violence.Β When I was a college intern at NBC News Washington in 2008, I would watch your MSNBC appearances on the monitor in our office. At that point I could only dream of having a platform like yours, which has grown exponentially since then. Now that I have a platform (albeit it much, much smaller than yours) and I couldn't fathom using it to gaslight the country into believing a hateful man stood for a public good. Maybe it's time to consider how you're using yours.Β Marisa

This is an insane take
"In short, attacks on shield law provision lay bare the anti-abortion movementβs goal of weaponizing the criminal legal systemβoften by investigating, arresting, or prosecuting patients and providersβto eliminate abortion access nationwide."
Are we doomed to a demographic destiny of decline because ladies aren't having babies? No.
We've been here before. It turns out that population projections only describe one of many possible futures. Our actual future is still to be written.
Why would anyone do that??
Map showing where Florida residents traveled in 2024; bar chart showing increase in travel out of state for abortion care from 3300 in 2023 to 8400 in 2024.
But we also captured big changes, particularly in the Southeast, where Florida's six week ban led to many more people traveling out of state for care.
Everyone deserves access to abortion care in their communities via their preferred method, whether that is an in clinic procedure, via telemedicine, or abortion pills sourced form a community network. Any restrictions that limit people's choices are unjust. Full stop.
Mass deportations is a reproductive justice issue.
Bodily autonomy is impossible if you are afraid to leave your house, afraid to pick your kids up from school, afraid to see your doctor.
Pro tip: If you ever see inflammatory doomsday-style headlines about the "dangers" of abortion pills, don't believe it. It's ALWAYS the forced birth faux-cicians manipulating data to demonize and ban abortion. buff.ly/MSpELSP
βItβs not just the cost of travel itself or the cost of the procedure. Itβs also the support of trying to figure out how to navigate a patchwork of laws, find a clinic with appt availability, get child care β most abortion patients have children β find accommodation.β @imaddowzimet.bsky.social
New data from our Monthly #Abortion Provision Study show that 155,000 US abortion patients crossed state lines for care in 2024.
