If you're curious and would like to see more of Hungry Ghosts, I'm actually going to stream it today at 6 PM GMT on my Twitch Channel, starting from the beginning.
It'll be a slow playthrough as I'll use Google Translate to play though, just so you know.
www.twitch.tv/horrorvisuals
Looks like there are some fan translation projects in progress, but I haven't been able to find any that's finished.
It's really not that hard to play once you figure out the menus and the main mechanics.
Unfortunately, thereβs no official English localization. That means most players outside Japan never saw it back in the day, making Hungry Ghosts a truly obscure horror game.
For that same reason, take all this info with a grain of salt. I literally use Google Translate as I play.
Expect dark, oppressive hallways and exteriors, and eerie spirits. Some actually look pretty weird.
And a story thatβs more existential dread than blatant scares. Think King's Field atmosphere meets Japanese folklore and Buddhist concepts of rebirth and punishment.
Your goal is to reach the Gate of Judgment. But thatβs not enough on its own. How you behave, what you help, what you destroy, how you interact with spirits affects whether youβll be reborn or consigned to eternal suffering.
It's all free movement. No point and click stuff. You walk and look around using the left analog stick, perform actions and attack using the right analog stick, R1 to run, etc.
Combat is pretty fluid and simple. You literally just push the right analog stick up to attack.
PS2 didn't have many first person games compared to all the other genres, so this by itself is kind of an anomaly, not to mention that it's a first person HORROR game.
It actually plays really well, dare I say, beyond its time. Maybe only a little hard to get used to.
And I mean there are a lot of choices. Even opening a simple door usually has two choices. Do you investigate first, or do you open the door right away?
Also most actions are done by you manually, using the right analog stick. I pause here for a sec before figuring that out.
Unlike typical survival horror games of its era, this one is first-person, slow, and introspective. Instead of simply only fighting monsters, you navigate the consequences of your choices in a purgatorial world.
Narrative choices, contextual actions, and more.
Developed by Deep Space and published by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2003, Hungry Ghosts casts you as a lost soul stuck in a limbo-like afterlife, haunted by spirits and judged for your past actions.
Hungry Ghosts is an obscure, first person horror game from the PlayStation 2.
Itβs one of the most surprising and eerie horror experiences hiding in the consoleβs library, and it never even left Japan.
Here is a thread about itπ§΅
Taking around 20 minutes to finish, it's the developer's first game project. Check it out here:

Bottle of Sickness
Developed by HanoiAnalog
It's a short first-person horror game where you work at an android maintenance shop and do what you're told, while dealing with your subconscious playing tricks on you.
This man is such a show off π
About 4-5 hours
Also a big thanks to those who came and joined the streams as I played through the game.
After a short break from Resident Evil, I'll start the next marathon where I'll play ALL Resident Evil games. All of them, including the mobile titles. Planning on doing that in two weeks.
Rolled the credits on Resident Evil Requiem.
What a great game. I have some thoughts on it, which I'll turn into a video to better explain what I think about this anomaly of a game.
It should be ready by this weekend.
