Very soon...
Very soon...
Not just that, but also governed by its open source community...
Why? I'm the head guy at Thunderbird. Curious why that makes you feel like you have to switch off K-9? (We've been maintaining the app for years now).
Hopefully you feel like that's getting better. Which part is the worst offender?
Get off Gmail, use Thunderbird (and soon Thundermail).

Can we learn something about how to use tech in a healthy way from... The Amish? I think we can.

Ultimately, it is a "normal" technology we can change for the better - if we engage. If we don't, it is destined to be everything we hate.

(3/3) There is much to be done to improve the GenAI landscape.
To make it privacy-respecting. (I have a project looking at this)
To make it green (same project looking at this).
To use ethical training data (see datacollective.mozillafoundation.org)
(2/3) The Mozilla Corporation (which makes Firefox) is experimenting with ways to let their users try out different LLM providers. They are still building a safe and reliable browser.
Interesting read on this:

I understand what you are saying, but there are some nuances here I would like to share.
The original post is about the Mozilla Foundation doing something good in helping the California government have a thoughtful conversation about how and where it depoys generative AI.

I encourage you to read this: www.anildash.com/2025/05/01/w...
All of what you call out are not the tech itself (LLMs), but what data the models are trained on and what their energy sources are.
We'd like to be engaged it moving AI to a better place. Not just complaining about it on the Internet.
βOur mission has always been to prove that you can imagine and innovate without exploitation. Mozilla Foundation is honored to be part of this Council that embodies those principles at exactly the scale and moment itβs needed most.β
Perfect words for what we need to do @nabiha.bsky.social
Tech Cooperative? Been thinking about how the Thunderbird (Community) Council being involved in our business helps us avoid enshittification.
How could we turn that system into something that is more inclusive of all users? Been fascinated by how Coops (think REI) democratize the corporation.
We are building tech you can trust.
Thank you to @ostifofficial.bsky.social and 7A Security for their collaboration on the security audit for Thunderbird Send, our end-to-end encrypted file transfer service (coming to everyone soon, open source now).

Truly open, real choice and trustworthy. Mozilla's take on AI. Listen to @mozilla.org President Mark Surman talk with the Financial Times about our vision for AI.

"Big tech. The mainstream of tech is wired to harvest our creativity, to harvest our data, to harvest our money. Only to benefit a few people.
We can and must build a different kind of tech industry, that has humans in mind and shares the wealth with all of us"
π
The internet should belong to all of us π
This Giving Tuesday, stand with the people building a tech future thatβs open by design and shaped by community.
Your contribution today sets the bar for what good technology can be. Join us π

"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Strangely seems appropriate for both Jurassic Park and Silicon Valley.
Due to my job making email application @thunderbird.net, I'm contractually obligated to watch You've Got Mail each year.
Amazing how relevant the movie still is.
Great afternoon with a brew from @boulevardbeer.bsky.social called "The Nutcracker", Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Here we go. π :)
The AI debate is stuck between doomβsayers and hypeβmachinesβwhat we need are Realists who see generative AI as the powerful, imperfect tool that it is. Join me in being a Realist.

A look into how we (Mozilla) think about our role to play in the AI landscape. We're trying to build a future where people are empowered by AI, not drowning in slop.
You've got to actively make the world you want to live in.
This city really shines in fall. Lots of people planted trees, whose shade they never sat under here in KC. Quite literally.
Mozilla is more than any group or product. It's the Rebel Alliance
A community working to make tech serve everyone, not just the shareholders of seven companies.
Technology should be more than a vehicle for profit. It should empower people to live more fulfilling lives. That's Mozilla's mission.
But Mozilla is also more than any group or product. It's a community of people working to make tech serve everyone, not just the shareholders of seven companies.
Technology should be more than a vehicle for profit. It should empower people to live more fulfilling lives. That's what Mozilla builds.
Make good tech the norm.
Stand up for a better internet.
We have the power and change doesn't happen unless people stand up, roll up their sleeves and do something about it. That's the message of the Mozilla Foundation and its wonderful director @nabiha.bsky.social
