A lost generation of news consumers? Survey shows how teenagers dislike the news media You don't have to tell Cat Murphy or Lily Ogburn about the attitudes of young people toward journalists.

'We live in response to a monarchy': Judge appears critical of deployment of National Guard in L.A. California officials argue that President Trump exceeded his authority by federalizing the National Guard without the consent of Gov. Gavin Newsom and by deploying Marines on American soil.

“We’re talking about the president is exercising his authority, and of course, the president is limited in his authority,” U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer said in court Thursday. “That’s the difference between the president and King George.”

L.A. law enforcement's treatment of journalists during protests is once again under scrutiny Journalists have been shot with less-lethal police rounds, tear-gassed, shoved and detained while chronicling the ongoing civil unrest and military intervention in Los Angeles.

“The reality is police are not the ones who’re allowed to decide who is press,” @adamrose.bsky.social told @latimes.com. Let journalists do their jobs without getting nailed from behind with munitions. #JournalismIsNOTACrime

In the last 20 or so minutes I’ve seen LAPD officers shove women to the ground without provocation, rip a sign out of a man’s hand and then swing a baton into his leg and raise a less-lethal launcher to aim
directly at a protester (which I’m 99% is a major policy violation.)

What Can (and Can't) The National Guard Actually Do? So what is the National Guard? What can it do? And what limits do state governors—and presidents—have on sending in its troops?

President Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles on Saturday night in response to immigration protests there.

What can the Guard do? What can’t it do? How is sending in the National Guard different than invoking the Insurrection Act?

Newsom proposes $20-million funding cut for California newsrooms, citing budget issues The state confirmed Wednesday that it will pay out $10 million, instead of $30 million, to California newsrooms for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Talk about a bait-and-switch! @gavinnewsom.bsky.social killed a bill that would have taxed #Google & #Meta to support California newsrooms. He sold the deal based on a state-funded infusion that is now slashed by two-thirds. Let’s finally get serious about ending news deserts. #LocalNewsMatters

“It’s bigger than these text messages,” said Kelly Aviles, outside counsel for @latimes.com. “The city seems to believe they can destroy whatever they want whenever they want, and that they don’t have a duty to the public to retain public records.” #LocalNewsMatters
