NPC sitting on a chair with a drink and headphones, with two other NPCs in the background.
Just some NPCs hanging out for a chill #screenshotsaturday.

Been thinking about reviving my personal website where I can show off my side projects, and this video is pretty spot on with how it's been going so far. Needless to say, no actual work has been done ๐

Don't quite understand what this tool is for, but the snapping sure is satisfying!
Hmm all the dog games make me want to get a dog just so I can make a game about it ๐ถ
Couldn't resist the urge to add headphones for the NPCs with the "listening to music" walking animation.
#gamedev #indiegame
That's pretty much how my NPCs looked all day today while I was debugging their walking animations.
Added more variety of walking animations and speeds today. Turned out to be more challenging than I expected, as I had to make sure the step speed stays in sync with the movement with various speeds and blending weights. Some of them are also affected by the character's personality.
Implementing new walking animations for the NPCs today. I think it's going well!

So the ears make the cat look stressed out rather than relaxed.
The loaf is great, but why are the ears pressed down? Cats only press their ears down when they're scared or intently listening to something behind them.
I made the weather and time of day affect NPC leisure. So now more people will hang out outside on a sunny day, whereas indoor activities will be more popular when it rains or during the night.

By the way, multi-letter functions are usually distinguished from single-letter variable multiplication by how they are italicized, at least in print. So there is a subtle difference. I remember when I wrote articles in LaTeX it was a minefield of what should be in italics and what shouldn't.
Nothing helps you escape the February dreariness like a walk through a summer city in VR.

Indeed. I think I'll have to make a facial rig for blinking, so I might as well add other animations as well at that point.
The NPCs went from dead to really intense after I added eye movement. I've also tried adding blinking/closing eyes, but that proved to be more complicated than I expected, so I decided to leave it for later.

I couldn't put my finger on what this reminded me of, but you're spot on!
Technically self-shadowing should be on, so there should be shadows there. Not sure why they aren't showing ๐ค
New devlog! In this one I discuss what is still missing from my technically feature-complete procedural NPCs.

Two pictures of the same NPC looking at the player from different angles and making eye contact.
I got the NPC eye movement working, so they now make eye contact with the player and with each other. Such a small touch, but it makes them feel so much more alive!

A rainy day in a virtual city with neon lit skyscrapers.
It's #screenshotsaturday, and that means it's time for more rainy Vuntra City.
#gamedev #indiegame
I forgot to add a check if the item an NPC decided to pick up is already held by someone else. So they will just yank items out of your hands ๐ Already fixed but I thought it was a funny bug. Also don't mind the floating through the chair, that's just how we sit down in Vuntra City.
#indiegame
By the way, the umbrellas can be picked up by the player as well. Although they can be hard to find, as they rarely spawn in the world by themselves and the NPCs won't give you theirs ๐
#gamedev #indiegame
Yes! There are also some very cool glowing umbrellas in Cyberpunk that I could take inspiration from.
A game character sitting at a street bar with a glass in his hand.
Also made the NPCs occasionally pick up random items in their vicinity when they sit down. They don't know what to do with them (yet) and drop them very inconsiderately when they get up.
Thank you! Right now I only have one pretty generic umbrella model but I might add more later.
Guess what? Umbrellas!
Actually, NPCs can now hold any type of item in either hand. Umbrellas are just the first thing I gave them.

A street bar with trees and street lights on a rainy evening in a procedural city.
Just a rainy evening in Vuntra City.

I just have to boost @thelucian.bsky.social's latest video. He's just recently started a devlog working on his first game, but it's so entertaining and high effort, he deserves more views. Check it out: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqEl...
Watching The Making of Disco Elysium by /noclip tonight. I must say, Disco Elysium is the game I recognized as Eastern European immediately without knowing anything about it. Even though it's set in a fictional universe, just a few minutes in, I thought "Holy sh*t, I've lived in this place".
