The thing about all these freak AI execs constantly going "our machine may have gained sentience?!" is that they want slaves. That they are ok with slave labor.

And *then* it always, always turns out their latest AI trick actually used slave labor somewhere in the global south.

They're slavers.

This has nothing to do with the specific content here, but Polymarket adopting the language of news, here with BREAKING, and with Texas election results earlier this week, is BAD. Polymarket is not and will never be a news org or break news. It's a betting app. It's Draft Kings for sociopaths.

People Are Calling Meta Ray-Bans "Pervert Glasses" On Bluesky, users quickly embraced the term "pervert glasses" to refer to Meta's Ray Ban smart glasses, following a shocking investigation.

Make it stick.

It’s so frustrating because obviously that is not how cloud based systems interacting simultaneously with however many people could possibly work so I think β€œwell, they’re lying”… but there’s also a part of me that says β€œbut what if all the people working at these companies really are this stupid”

It is so damning of US news media that so many outlets refuse to just straight up say that Senator Tim Sheehy assaulted an activist.

He did not "help" Capitol police. They did not need his help. He wanted to assault the guy and did. He should resign.

I’m not a Linux evangelist b/c a) I do think there is a learning curve for a lot of folks and b) it’s very tiresome to go to the mat for any os

But I did make the plunge when Windows 11 was announced and haven’t looked back. I’d much rather look up how to make my machine do something than ask a LLM

People keep suggesting Minneapolis. No, you do not want this. You get this, you get a massive injection of $ into police and state surveillance, which does not go away when the politicians leave.

As a recovering Catholic, I think about this a lot whenever I see the tradcath wannabes that seem to want the trappings without the theology

There’s a lot of issues I have with Catholic theology but the creep of Evangelistic ideas into the American church still gets my kneejerk hackles up

Apollo with the dodgeball of prophecy

Apollo with the dodgeball of prophecy

Years ago in another life I gave a guest lecture at The Hague warning β€œAI weapons” could be invoked to remove accountability for war crimes from the chain of command. I said β€œthere are no autonomous weapons, only unsupervised ones,” and sadly it seems I was cooking with that one

Yes, and it is about the ability to shed responsibility for any action taken by the machine

At the end of the day, the promise of AI is the promise of no accountability for people with the power to ruin and end lives

It’s bad when a dictatorship gets a hold of these events and uses them for sportswashing

I really don’t think we’re prepared as a global community for what happens when a country that is actively hostile to the countries it hosts gets these events

Cuba says eight World Baseball Classic delegation members denied United States visas Cuba is set to play against Puerto Rico, Colombia, Panama and Canada in San Juan, Puerto Rico, during pool play of the WBC, which is scheduled from March 5 until March 17.

This country is supposed to host the World Cup later this year and the Olympics in 2028!

I know WBC gets a lot less attention, but this is alarming ahead of both of those events as it’s a failure to honor hosting duties of an event like this

Abolish the legal gender marker entirely. No government can be trusted to have a database of which people have changed theirs, no government has any business tracking what your gender is "supposed" to be in the first place.

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

Thousands of institutions abandoned programs, ended or rewrote scholarships, closed down clubs and publications, all in pre-emptive compliance.

And you know why?

Mostly because they wanted to do it if they thought they could blame someone else for it.

They raided the jailed children to steal their letters.

The problem, in federal officials' minds, wasn't confining children in prison-camp conditions; it was that the children could tell the public about it.

Everyone who cares about abolishing ICE needs to read up on the Prairieland case.

This is the playbook for repression the Trump regime will use to push back against popular resistance to it's ethnic cleansing campaign.

Okay look I'm glad they're ditching Flock but if the "city's network of surveillance cameras" can still be subpoenaed by out of state law enforcement for things like "did a woman come here to get an abortion from our state" then we shouldn't have them at all, period.

Watching pro AI people in Reddit discussions about slop PRs (code edit submissions to open source public software projects) complaining "What's the problem just review the PRs, if they're good merge them" really underlines a lot of the problematic way that AI boosters devalue respect for labour.

There has been no draw down today. ICE snatched someone off Central Ave out of his car because he looked Latino before then letting him go a couple hours later. They were stopping people in Blaine on highway 65, they were all around Fridley, and were in the parking lot of the St Anthony liquor store
