More on the promontory fort at Helsby, #Cheshire - as mapped by the OS at the turn of the C19-20, and on a recent satellite view. The massive sandstone ridge is obvious even from above, & the earthworks visible to varying degrees, depending on land-use. #HillfortsWednesday

Large wooden double doors set into a grand doorway: Corinthian columns, pointed arch, detailed mouldings, etc. The word 'BANK' is engraved ion the stone lintel. Plants are starting to grow from the cracks, and the whole thing is behind a temporary security fence.
Main entrance to the former National Westminster Bank, Hardshaw Street, #StHelens. Built circa 1860, remodelled 1878 & altered inside when converted into a bar in the 1980s. Closed since 2015 and not in the best of health. GII listed.

A black and white postcard in landscape format. It shows a group of men posing for a photograph at a Bowls game. Love that almost everyone is wearing a hat of some kind: boater, cap, bowler, fedora and top hat! In the background is a trellis screen and beyond the green are houses with trees. Looks like an affluent area of Manchester.
Crown Green Bowls
Hello Sunday! Here's a postcard from about 1900 of a bowling club in Manchester. Crown Green Bowls was a very popular game at that time. Many local parks and pubs had bowling greens. π

Photograph taken at the wonky Tudor masterpiece of Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire.
Image shows marks carved into a wooden beam to ward off evil. Tudors were superstitious and believed that these apotropaic marks would keep away demons, witches and evil spirits.

Photograph taken crouched down behind a clump of lovely pink cyclamen, looking towards the Tudor Masterpiece of Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire. Didn't think I'd manage the double whammy of historic house and signs of spring, but never say never!
Deep blue sky with some winter tree skeleton branches at either side. In the centre of the top half of the frame is a largeTudor house (built between 1504 and 1610). Lots of elements of the house are wonky, mostly because the owners decided they wanted a bigger house so plonked on an additional storey...not the brightest idea and I imagine the architects at the time being at their wits end. Green lawn leading up to the house and at the bottom of the image a large clump of small pink cyclamen. On the right hand side is a group of two adults and a child heading towards the entrance. One of them is wearing a pink coat which echoes the flower colour well.
Little Moreton Hall, and some others well managed by the National Trust, are starting to open their doors again after winter shut down for conservation work. This place had only been open a few days so visitors were giddy to be able to enjoy exploring again...the sunshine helped too!

Photograph taken looking along the deep oak windowsill of a long row of leaded glass windows at Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire. The Tudor hall was built in stages between 1504 - 1610. Image was taken in a room off the Long Gallery on the top most layer of the property. Monochrome filter used to focus on the shadows and pattern.
Thick wood-framed windows, all tall rectangles, filled with clear leaded glass in a repeating pattern of diamond, lozenge and rectangle shapes. The windows are three layers tall and many more wide (only some caught in the image). Sunlight has created amazing shadow patterns on the wide windowsill from the leaded glass. The windowsill has been made with two oak boards for depth.
Wonderful property to visit and run very well by the National Trust.
