It's not as bad as you think. The default PTV livery is multiple shades of green & yellow on a white background - slightly updated by Yarra Trams since the early 2010s. There's still some of the older MMTB livery that can be seen on the City Circle route (in addition to the heritage colours).

Don't despair. there are still many W-class trams in operational condition. 11 of them are in Melbourne running the (free) City Circle tourist service. They're also running or being restored in regional cities like Bendigo, Launceston etc and (as you've pointed out) some are overseas.
Still in St Kilda, but skipping forward 4 years to 1987.
