Love seeing feral pigeon variation...surely the most extensive of any wild bird! How amazing that they thrive in the concrete jungle. Here are some examples from across the UK, being studied for projects supported by @gensocuk.bsky.social @leverhulme.ac.uk @britishecologicalsociety.org
Naciri, M., et al. (2026). A captureβrecapture framework for combining biologging data with physical captures to decompose and estimate demographic rates: Simulations across life cycles and application to polar bears. Methods in Ecology and Evolution, 17, 585β597.
Using a combination of two research programs called capture-recapture and biologging, ecologists can measure how often polar bears survive, breed and care for their young β data that are often hard to collect due to their ecology.
A female polar bear and her yearling cub are waking up from sedation. The mother is wearing a GPS collar that helps ecologists follow their journey across the Arctic.

SPG chair Neil Metcalfe said "Itβs good to see that the Scottish Government is still very committed to combatting climate change, and has some good plans on how to do this, but there is definitely a need for ecologists to point out where those plans are actually going to cause more harm than good."
They found much to applaud, particularly the focus on peatland restoration, but were less impressed by plans around over-simplistic tree planting, intensive farming and a lack of emphasis on soil health.
The word βsoilβ doesnβt feature once in Scotlandβs thirty-one-page draft Climate Change Plan. Professor Neil Metcalfe BES Scottish Policy Group Chair
How do the Scottish Government's plans for achieving target carbon budgets stack up?
Our Scottish Policy Group recently responded to a consultation on the draft Climate Change Plan.
Last December, the Planning and Infrastructure Act quietly became law. But its journey was anything but quiet.
We explore what this means, what happens next & why ecologists should care.

Among these recommendations is the need to prioritise nature restoration from source to sea
βIf we have any hope of reviving our rivers, nature-based solutions must be at the heart of government plans. They are essential to ensure these vital ecosystems are resilient.β says BES President Mel Austen
Weβve joined 40 other environment groups, led by @wclnews.bsky.social, outlining the recommendations we believe are essential to ensure the governmentβs upcoming Water Reform Bill delivers the βonce in a generation reformsβ needed to bring our waterways back from the brink.

If we have any hope of reviving our rivers, nature-based solutions must be at the heart of government plans.
In the governmentβs 50 page white paper setting out plans to reform our broken water system, nature-based solutions are mentioned just five times.
I had the privilege of attending #BES2025 this past December and writing about the wonderful work being done by just three of MANY ecologists to form equitable collaborations! You can read about Amanda, Karla, and Niru's work in the blog:

This amazing photo is by Joy Saha and it won the Nature, Food and Farming category of our photo competition, Capturing Ecology.
Thousands of jute sticks float in the river, creating natural patterns in Bangladesh. Jute is soaked in water for 20-25 days to separate the jute fibre from the plant stem. The fibres are then sold for use in textiles such as yarn, sacks, carpets, and curtains β a vital part of Bangladeshβs economy.
