Difficult times call for cooperation and dialogue. But our voting system keeps giving total power to parties that only a fraction of voters support.
On 30% of the vote, one party could win full control of our economy, health, foreign policy and defence.
We can't take that risk.
๐ฅ More than 20,000 people have signed the petition calling for changing the voting system to be part of the Representation of the People Bill.
First Past the Post leaves millions of people without representation. It's time to scrap it.

Itโs time to end Britainโs first-past-the-post election lottery
โAn electoral system should do two things: ensure that the majority rules and that significant minorities are adequately represented. First past the post achieves neither.โ

Every time Labour created a modern parliament โ Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, London โ they chose proportional representation writes MP, Jenny Riddell Carpenter. Why is Westminster the exception? If PR is good enough for devolved Britain, itโs good enough for the UK.

"Under these rules, negative campaigning is rational. Bar charts (sometimes questionable ones) matter far more than manifestos."
Our campaigner Livvy writes about what she saw and heard in Gorton and Denton - and why the case for PR is stronger than ever. ๐
People are sharing polls with Labour, Reform & Green pretty much neck and neck in Gorton & Denton. This shows that tactical voting is a must to stop Reform. It also proves we have the numbers to do it. But what some may have missed, is the question of who is more *willing* to vote tactically...

The daft thing is that with Proportional Representation there'd be no need for this self-destructive war within Labour. It could split into its component parts - left and right - and people could vote for what they wanted. It's only First-Past-the-Post that forces these irreconcilables together.
โLabour has a majority, while simultaneously facing the prospect of electoral oblivion. Instead, I am suggesting that imagination be used.
I do think that if Labour wishes to restore its credibility, it will deliver electoral reform.โ

โFirst past the post allows the two traditional parties of government to threaten and cajole us, warning that weโll split the vote if we donโt support them. The splitting-the-vote argument is not a result of the system. It is the point of the system.โ

Each constituency has a single MP, yet for most people this means the MP who โrepresentsโ them in parliament doesnโt share their politics, didnโt win a majority of the vote in their local area, and was chosen by a tiny handful of party insiders long before election day.
"A dedicated group of independents and like-minded members of the two parties need to put their heads together, with serious philanthropic backing, to develop a real movement to create proportional representation in America".

The Labour NEC including Starmer block Andy Burnhams chance to stand in the Manchester by-election.

Itโs become normality that Starmer says one thing to get elected as Labour leader, then does the opposite, just like on PR.

But there is always a post: ๐๐ฝ
Andy Burnham has announced that he is seeking permission to stand in the upcoming Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election.
If he won and became an MP, Burnham could mount a leadership challenge against Starmer.
Burnham is a strong supporter of Proportional Representation๐ช
