An explosive #eruption of Hayli Gubbi #volcano, located SE of Erta'Ale in the Afar Rift (Ethiopia), began at ~08:30 UTC on Nov 23. Eruption onset was fortuitously captured by a @planet.com overpass at 08:31 UTC. Hayli Gubbi has no record of Holocene eruptions. Toulouse VAAC reporting ash to ~15 km.

Our satellites just can’t pass up a big gathering of people, especially not the world’s largest with an expected 400 million in attendance. The 1300-year-old Hindu pilgrimage, called Maha Kumbh Mela, is underway in the Indian city of Prayagraj, where the Ganges and Yamuna rivers converge.
Left - a large methane plume from a leaking oil and gas pipeline was detected in the Texas Permian Basin by Tanager-1 on Oct. 9. After being shared with federal and state agencies, the leak was voluntarily fixed by the operator. Right - a subsequent Tanager observation on Oct. 24 detected no methane.
2024 highlight: On Oct 9, our @planet.com Tanager-1 satellite detected a significant methane leak — equivalent to the CO2 emissions of driving 47 gas-powered cars for a year. The leak was swiftly reported and repaired by the operator.
