Stuff like this is why I’ve spent 2025 aggressively pursuing digital sovereignty by reducing (or eliminating!) cloud dependence wherever I can.
You can only go so far though, and it’s terrifying how they can unilaterally shut off an Apple ID, especially in a world where Sign in with Apple exists.

Since my Bluesky is just book reviews, I'm on to the Bobiverse and it has been amazing. Basic premise is software dude sells his company, uses some of the cash to sign on with a cryonics company, dies, his brain is repurposed in 2133 as a space probe's AI after the company had its assets liquidated.

The Hyperion Cantos is the definition of the sunk cost fallacy. Book one was kinda sorta ok, but somehow didn’t include a climax? Just all build up. Book two is like some kind of study on how many times you can make the reader think, “Surely this gets better, I’m one book in, I can’t give up now.”

I think GoodReads recommending Hyperion really misunderstood what I was asking for with “hard sci-fi”. 🫣

Beat CloverPit on my Steam Deck today. A roguelike slot machine jail is a hell of a concept. Still falters in the same way most roguelikes do in that once you understand the game you know if a run is worth playing pretty early based on your first few items. No idea how you fix that in roguelikes.

It's frustrating how common this is! The Expanse, The Dark Tower, the Dune books, and so many others... It's like "awesome premise, world-class set up, disappointing payoff" could be its own genre.
Maybe GRRM is on to something by just not bothering to finish A Song of Ice and Fire?

Just finished the Children of Time series and god damn these books. It all has an incredible set up, with some amazing world building on a multigenerational time scale, but the author just paints himself into corners he has no idea how to get out of and somehow each book ends stupider than the last.

This really boils my piss with ChatGPT. Any popular book it knows a TON about and will answer very authoritatively. Until you call it out, with obscure books it’ll re-phrase your question as a statement with a bizarre amount of certainty on what it tells you instead of just saying, “I don’t know.”

When I look at my LinkedIn it’s always the weirdest hot takes imaginable, made worse by AI, posted with a bizarre level of confidence. I always wonder what this is like in other industries…In industrial grade chemicals is there someone with similar brain rot angrily posting about glycine production?

Maybe it's just the rose colored internet nostalgia glasses but ... damn. The glory days of Twitter where everyone was there and people were just sharing cool shit made everything so easy compared to today.

Social media is so fragmented now that aiming takes at bsky also seems bad? It's harder than ever to get anything noticed. I’ve got tens of thousands of no strings attached free Apple Arcade codes I can’t even give away…Feels like unless you play the outrage game you just can't get traction anymore.

We struggled with this so much at TouchArcade. The content that gets CEO's to pay is deeply insightful industry analysis that most normal people just don't care about. They want to know what games are cool. Serving both audiences well is impossible, and subscription fatigue puts a clock on it all.

We were at a college football game last Saturday sitting next to two younger guys who spent the entire game just saying “six seven!” So bizarre.

A hill I’m willing to die on is in-flight WiFi should be a blind auction where you bid what you want to pay and that is then used to determine the QoS priority. A lot of people would probably just bid the minimum and have normal shitty WiFi. If you have work to do, you can bid more and get it done.

Be sure to install the iOS 26 release candidate and update the background of every big iMessage thread you're in. People not on iOS 26 don't see that you do this and then it just shows up for them when they update. Great opportunity to distribute Goatse, Detroit Hardcore, and more to your friends.

How in the world can Apple be announcing this AirPods Pro translation functionality without it being fully laden with Hitchhiker's Guide references? What a missed opportunity.

My career day advice is worthless. It boils down to: be born at the right time, nearly drop out of high school, then fall ass-backwards into the .com boom because no one else knew how to do this weird niche stuff you happened to be hyper-focused on… and suddenly companies couldn’t get enough of it.

This times a million. My career started as a dumb teenager that knew FutureSplash Animator, Allaire’s Cold Fusion, the basic fundamentals of Linux, and how to quickly crimp a CAT5 cable when those kinds of things were considered black magic to most and required reading books from the library. 🙃

It’s fucking wild loading Facebook and seeing these posts back to back:
- GoFundMe for funeral expenses from a local family that can’t afford to bury their son.
- New Tesla pay package to make Elon Musk the first trillionaire.
- Begging for leads on sub-$1,200/mo apartments to avoid homelessness.

My head canon is the song at the end of each episode of Alien Earth is actually being played in universe. The CEO of Weyland Yutani, 100 years in the future, in her opulent skyscraper office just absolutely jamming to Cherub Rock.

I’ve been chasing the Three Body Trilogy high through many different sci-fi series. Currently on the Children of Time books and the way humans are remembered in the author’s far future is amusing. Seeing the human form makes aliens aggressive. Humanity is largely only know for things like emoji.
