you need to understand the fundament of anatomy to be able to trace a reference without retaining any goofy distortions in the end product. also so you can change awkward posing and make it look more fluid and natural!

when people say "don't trace photos to learn art" it's not because of any absurdist moral stances or whatever, it's because your brain automatically corrects for lense distortion in photos but not when it is translated to lineart. observe.
