Offscreen Film Festival: the 2026 poster (by Gilles Vranckx) depicting a Belgian Malinois wearing the uniform of Spanish dictator General Franco, with John Woo-type doves fluttering around its head, against a skew-whiff background of USA-style red stripes and a blue star, with a rifle-sight target over the festival's slogan ("Join the cult!") and the festival's black and white logo approximately two-thirds of the way down.

The full programme for this year's @offscreenff.bsky.social (11-29 March in Brussels) has now been announced, and includes a strand devoted to the cinema of John Woo. So here is a piece I have written on Heroic Bloodshed, the genre forever associated with Woo. projectedfigures.com/2020/04/19/h...
OFFSCREEN FILM FESTIVAL: Brussels March 11-29. Full programme now online, including ticket details. Premieres, Spanish genre, 1970s US paranoia, John Woo, Harry KΓΌmel, Exorcist II: The Heretic, The Man Who Fell to Earth and more!
Futurama is brilliant. Some classic episodes even in the final season. Plus there's one episode that makes me cry even just thinking about it - I can't remember The Simpsons ever having made me cry like that.
Two bloody hands, each holding an eyeball.
...but also lesser-known gems such as THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DARK, BLOOD CEREMONY, KILLER OF DOLLS, CREATION OF THE DAMNED, THE GLASS CEILING, I HATE MY BODY, POACHERS, FACES, CANICHE. Each new, unfamiliar film turned out to be a total delight, audacious, outrageous and/or completely bonkers.
EXORCISING FRANCO: SPANISH GENRE CINEMA 1968-1983. This is a FANTASTIC restrospective, featuring not just classics like WHO CAN KILL A CHILD?, LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE, THE HOUSE THAT SCREAMED, CANNIBAL MAN, BLOOD SPATTERED BRIDE, ARREBATO... www.offscreen.be/en/offscreen...

Sorry to get radical but I donβt think itβs my job or yours to embrace, accept, understand - and certainly not to use - the thing being sold to us as AI. I donβt like any part of it, so I wonβt. Iβm missing out? Good, thatβs what I want. Youβre worried about me missing out? Thatβs fuckin weird, man.

A vintage hardback book - No Medicine For Murder by Jeanne Wilson. The illustrated cover shows a dark-haired woman in a tan dress. She is on the midst of stopping a glass of red wine and her eyes are wide in shock.
Todayβs best second-hand buy. Been after this for ages, primarily because of the fantastic Barbara Walton-designed cover.
reposting icymi, because this film is everything that I wished it would be
Summit's gone wrong: Evan & Galen Johnson and Guy Maddinβs hilarious BuΓ±uelian banquet RUMOURS (2024) "has G7 leaders facing an absurdist apocalypse with only bland, empty words". Screens 7pm this evening at Brussels' Nova Cinema for @offscreenff.bsky.social projectedfigures.com/2024/10/13/r...
An interesting calenderial coincidence between The Devil Rides Out (1968) and The Wicker Man (1973), both screened @offscreenff.bsky.social. Also, and slightly concerning: my daughter's birthday.
Tomorrow at 7:00 PM, I'll be introducing DEAD MAIL (2024) at the Offscreen Film Festival in Brussels. The film follows employees at a Mail Recovery Center whose job leads them to uncover a kidnapping. If you're a fan of the Coen brothers, youβll love this one.

Tomorrow night, Iβll be introducing SUNTAN (2016), my favorite film from Offscreen's Weird Greece program. Sun-drenched, darkly funny, and unsettling. A trip to a Greek island you'll never forget!
