Watched Elsie Jane Wilson’s The Dream Lady tonight on @oldfilmsflicker.bsky.social’s recommendation and it was such a delight! I’m in love with Carmel Myers’s playful performance and also her elephant haha

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate a 1926 silent film with an all-Black cast. "The Flying Ace," inspired by pioneering aviator Bessie Coleman and starring Kathryn Boyd, challenged Hollywood’s color line...A soaring legacy!

When I read this quote from Adela Rogers St. Johns in Kevin Brownlow's book "Hollywood: The Pioneers" I was like 😦

To the Film Industry in Crisis, A Look Back At Hollywood In 1926 What were people watching a century ago, and what does that say about where the industry goes now?

"What does all this have to say about where cinema stands in 2026? I don’t really know. Other than to speculate that the art of film, being so tied as it is to the business of making money, will always have its ebbs and its flows,” writes @oldfilmsflicker.bsky.social.

For my contribution to #WomenWritersWeek at @ebertvoices.bsky.social I wrote a look back at the film industry 100 years ago – the arrival of synced sound, the death of Valentino, Gilbert and Garbo, and more – and what we might be able to glean from its storied history.

Female Filmmakers in Focus: Grace Glowicki on "Dead Lover" An interview with the writer-director-star of this month's "Dead Lover."

"I’m not terribly interested in trying to create a perfect illusion of realism. I don’t find that super interesting as an actor or a filmmaker. It’s why I like Nicolas Cage."

For this month's column at @ebertvoices.bsky.social I spoke with filmmaker Grace Glowicki about her horror comedy DEAD LOVER

β€œMy intention with DEAD LOVER was that you can’t make a mistake, and if it’s fun, that’s what we have to follow.”

@oldfilmsflicker.bsky.social spoke w/ Grace Glowicki abt the joys of DIY filmmaking, the comic genius of Lina WertmΓΌller, and more:

I simply cannot describe the amount of deja vu I am feeling from post-9/11, when nearly every other democrat was revealing themselves as a mask-off racist who cared only about whether they could vacation in the middle east and could justify every single illegal and amoral action to do so.

This will go down in history with My Lai, Kent State, and Czechoslovakia 1968.

Killing little girls at a school in our name. What a dirty and war criminal government we have. They must face consequences. We must work to make them face consequences.

Grace Glowicki is so rad, one of my fave contemporary filmmakers. Dead Lover rocks, she’s great in Honey Bunch (now playing in a few places) and if you can find Tito it’s a lo-fi, micro-budget marvel. Totally adore her sensibility.

Grace Glowicki is an incredible monster (complimentary) of an artist, and I am so glad she's having a moment.

(Ben Petrie's pretty great too, and everything they do together is worth your time.)

I know journalism is a rapidly deteriorating industry, but it also feels like fighting a losing battle when folks on here are mostly sharing articles to dunk on them, rather than solid pieces from journos and critics out here trying our best every day to stay working and writing
