I think he might a jungle crow, they are common in Japan and very big.
Its the same in french, we have corbeau for raven and corneille for crow, but you can also use corbeau for both in common parlance.
Japan actually has its own crow breeds, alongside carrion crows and ravens. It also seems that while they have specific names, you can also use karasu interchangeably.
