"Why don't you just make your own stuff without a company?"
Because animation takes a lot of work even with a team. If you make your own stuff and you have a team, you have to pay them. Where's that money coming from if you're not working?
I need everyone whose response to yesterday's animation news was "Just go indie!" to understand two things.
1.) "Work For Hire" means the company owns what you've created. You have no rights to it unless explicitly stated in the contract.
2.) Going indie does not pay the bills.
seconding number 2 with something I've been very candid about:
I wouldn't be able to do Jellybox if my wife didn't have a full time job (with insurance) to support us both and if I didn't pick up part time work
not every indie pursuit becomes a full paying job, and if it does its not overnight
I think as long as you make an interesting or engaging storyboard it doesnโt matter. A lot of story can be told in the 3 minutes of a song

I personally like to start with the music but you can do it either way. This started by me listening to a song and imagining what might happen. Itโs not a weird question. Sometimes itโs even a combination/conversation between artists
Also I recommend drawing your acting rough and fast. The ugliest you can do while still clear. This helps you not get too stiff. Feel how the whole body is moving, including the spine and head tilt. Put it on model later and try to keep the spirit of your rough.

Donโt underestimate the value of listening to the track and acting it out multiple times, feeling it in your body even if u donโt film yourself. Think about how u would act if u were that character. So often people do stock or cliche poses. But even โtwinningโ can feel natural if u do it naturally.
