They might read from the bottom/back — but that is a generous interpretation.

If you’ve got a lot of USB A needs, I’d daisy chain a smaller hub off the big one to keep it to one cable 😄

I bought a second hand CalDigit TS3+ on eBay which has been solid. If you have a bit more budget I’d look at TS4 or TS5 depending on your port needs :)
