Not quite but I can forgive the assumption as it really does look like it. Its actually a pillared heightmap. It has some advantages and some disadvantages. If you look closely you can see the steps between cubes can be much smaller that the cube size giving smoother terrain

I spent the day making a new prop system for trees and other things but ended up having to scrap the system and revert back to earlier code. Some days are like that I guess.

Cubic pillars, And good eye, most people don't even get that when I explain it.
The game is not really a building game so the disadvantages are not to bad and it does allow much smaller transitions between tile height allowing for smoother terrain

I loved the Mr Driller games when they came out and although very similar Shovelware has big differences, 100 shorter levels, Boss levels, a multitude of traps but at the core that same style of fun block digging gameplay
