Given the size & diversity of the fanbase and the decades I've been aware of it, it's hard for much to feel like a hot take to me. Everything I love and everything I don't has gone through periods of being championed and derided.
Anyway, Colors Ultimate is better.

They're funny, but I'm a bit worried that all those "if Mario was a modern game" videos mean that "you keep playing as normal while characters talk" isn't a trendy way to convey story right now, because it's one that works REALLY well for me. :P
(walking cutscenes, on the other hand, are the devil)
But the most valuable thing about games to me is their interactivity. I see "playing a game" as something I'm actively DOING, not passively experiencing. So if a game makes me stop playing too often and/or for too long, that tends to ruin my immersion and engagement.
I don't hate story in video games. Watch my Metroid Dread video and I'll tell you all about how cool it is. And I liked it so much in Sonic & the Black Knight that I largely forgot to write about how absolutely hopeless I thought the game part of the game was!

But the vast majority of those changes aren't going to make a lick of difference to me, someone who puts a few dozen hours into a PokΓ©mon game every few years & never replays them until I've completely forgotten everything anyway.
Like, I'm sure BDSP would've been better for taking more cues from Platinum...
But most things that diehard fans obsess over aren't things I'd notice. For instance, if the NPCs had more diverse rosters, all that would mean to me is I'd be spamming STAB moves against *different* easy enemies.
And frankly, as a filthy casual PokΓ©mon fan, having EXP Share is *way* more critical to me being able to enjoy the game anyway.
I'm not disparaging "diehard fans" btw, I'm that way about Sonic & DK, and this helps me appreciate that my experience *as* someone who cares that much isn't universal.

I do wish they still gave you the option to disable it if you wanted to. Maybe hide it behind something esoteric so little kids who can't read well would never do it on accident?
I'd never shut it off myself, but it'd let people who would have a better time!
That awesome moment where something you've been working on becomes viable and can handle threats on its own hits just the same for me, whether I've been actively swapping it in and out or if it's just been hanging out on the team for a while. One just goes down a lot smoother.
I get it, it's just that negative is a positive in my case. Without Exp Share, the tedium of trying to get something to the point that it's capable is way too much of a grind, so I tend to just stick with the same roster. But with it, I'm free to experiment, thus more variety, thus more bonding.
Oh yeah, $60 is *crazy talk*.
If I was gonna recommend a modern PokΓ©mon to someone who's lapsed, it'd be Legends: Arceus all the way. Nothing's recaptured the magic for me like that one.

That's easy: Sun & Moon. It just never shut up, and it wrecked my ability to get immersed in the game. That was the first mainline PokΓ©mon that I didn't finish, I tapped out a dozen hours in because it just wasn't letting up.
There's a post-game area where you can catch lots of legendaries, the grand underground is MASSIVELY expanded and has tons of PokΓ©mon you couldn't get originally, you can do harder rematches against all gyms & Elite Four, and HMs aren't a thing, among other things.

Hmm, well, it has online functionality and compatibility with Home, so you can move your PokΓ©mon to other games a *lot* more easily. (On the DS you'd have to trade to BW, then trade to XY, then transfer to Box, then transfer to Home.)
It's L = A, but the four face buttons remain the same regardless.
