Thanks for pulling the charts. When looking at transit cost efficiency, we really do believe that last metric -- how much does it cost to move someone a mile toward their destination -- is the best gauge of efficiency.
We have not published such a resource (or seen others do that), but NTD data includes passenger miles and is the source of our analysis.
No internet debates for us, but just want to flag that in addition to being an excellent experience, we are one of the most cost-efficient transit operators in the region when accounting for distance. The myth that ferries are cost-inefficient is just that.
We broke our January ridership record and are now at 95% of 2019 ridership over the past 12 months. sanfranciscobayferry.com/january-2026...
We do feel that despite the slower speed during that area, the Richmond ferry route is quite serious based on high and growing ridership and preferable transit times compared to other modes.
Thanks for the support. We have slow zones on most of our routes to avoid negatively impacting ecosystems and communities. The approved ferry channel, which meets depth and wake requirements, travels west of Brooks. Most other vessels do the same.

We don't run Larkspur/Sausalito but there have been speedruns on our past free Clean Air Days. No official record tracking unlike BART; based on past efforts, all nine weekday terminals in our system with minimal biking/walking can be done in about 7 hours. South S.F. and Mare Island are tricky.
"Corpus" and "Echoes" are at the Downtown S.F. Ferry Terminal; "Coralee" is on the north side of the Ferry Building. The others are all walkable from the terminal, too. An amazing outdoor gallery from @sfport.bsky.social!
Sunning sunrises and sunsets AND the supermoon. Skies will be gorgeous across Northern California the next couple of days. Get outside! #CAwx

App-based transit maps are legally allowed to show ferry routes? And not as tiny dotted lines? That's wild.

Last week I went to San Francisco and Sacramento for work. Thanks @mobilityforwho.bsky.social for putting together a fun video featuring my very multimodal trip: biking my @bromptonbicycle.bsky.social to the airport and putting it in the overhead bin, using BART @sfbayferry.com and @amtrak.com!
Sign showing logos of Alameda County Transportation Commission and San Francisco Bay Ferry. Text reads: βYour voter-approved transportation dollars helped fund the construction of this ferry! For more information, visit www.AlamedaCTC.org.β Includes an illustration of a ferry boat.

Vallejo. Not only is the 'j' silent but the 'h' is, too!

Numbers are in: more growth for ferry ridership. Preliminary data shows 17% year over year increase in September.
Total ridership for the last 12 months: 2.9 million pax. Inching ever closer to that 3 million mark.
The Bay Area is choosing safe, clean and reliable transit over freeway gridlock.
View of the San Francisco Bay from the back of the Oakland bound ferry while pulling into Oakland. In the distance, the San Francisco skyline peeks through blue sky and haze underneath a bright setting sun with strong rays projecting out of the sunset. On the right hand side of the picture, cranes in the port of Oakland are set against a blue sky fading down into the orange light of sunset. The bay ripples in the foreground with waves created by the boat's propellors and sun reflecting off of the water.

Woodstock needs an unscheduled repair and will not be in operation on Tue., Sept 23 for until at least the early afternoon. @sfbayferry.com is working to quickly make the repair and hopes to have Woodstock back in service by late Tue. afternoon. Get updates from sanfranciscobayferry.com#bay-alerts
Last week our peak morning commute ridership (westbound only, arrive by 9:30 AM) landed at 2,774 per day.
That's our third best week for that figure since 2020. Beaten only by ... the two weeks prior.
Peak morning commute ridership is up 23% year over year. π
This is awesome. We also had a nice Tuesday, our best single-day September total (10,987) since 2020.
Imagine if all these people (plus @rideact.bsky.social and other transbay bus riders) had to be on the freeways and bridges instead? Does Google Maps have a darker shade of red available?
Agreed on the case for more funding for all transit modes. The pie needs to grow.
We agree that BART is very efficient in this context! No argument there. What we object to is using cost-per-trip figures that make the ferry look much less efficient than other transit modes by ignoring that ferries typically take people much longer distances. The same applies to commuter rail.
When you compare by cost per passenger mile, our system is one of the most efficient in the region. The metric you're using puts a 28-mile ferry ride from Vallejo to S.F. in the same bucket as a 2-mile bus ride.
ALERT: We're adding an extra trip leaving Oakland at 9:35 AM bound for Downtown S.F. to help travelers cross the Bay. We also have trips departing Oakland at 10:05, 10:35, 11:05, 11:30 and 12:05.
