I've been using AI a lot at work for he last month. I don't see the promised improvement in productivity. That being said, it's fun to use and I don't think it makes me less productive. But I didn't realize that it might be causing me to understand things less. www.anthropic.com/research/AI-... #ai

I hate all of this in almost every way a thing can be hated. I hate the factless waffle that surrounds Big AI’s every improbable goal. I hate how insipidly stupid, or just plain evil, those goals so often are, and the yawning chasm between them and any form of achievable reality. I hate that Big AI’s successes are inflated and its failures ignored β€” or are even categorised as hilarious mis-steps, like when AI chatbots tell people to eat poisonous mushrooms, put glue on pizza, or make air diffusers from chlorine gas.

I hate that Big AI consumes so much energy that every time you generate a six-fingered portrait of Anne Frank or a scene from the Vietnam war in the style of Studio Ghibli, you might as well just kill a polar bear with a crossbow. I hate that it can run roughshod over every copyright law and environmental protection on the planet in pursuit of the data it needs to continue failing, with no consequences save for the enrichment of the worst people on Earth, who have managed to make all of this magical bullshit seem sensible to an intellectual class comprised of people I wouldn’t trust to print an email.

Thanks for asking!

Sometimes, reporters push back but you can’t hear them (you might only have the mic during your question).

Like recently CBC asked Poilievre a question and he mischaracterized it in his answer.

If you listen, you can juuust hear the reporter push back β€” but no mic = no voice.

Canada's tech broligarchs have a GROUP CHAT?
Canada's tech broligarchs have a GROUP CHAT? YouTube video by Rachel Gilmore

Canada's tech broligarchs have A GROUP CHAT??

Yup, they sure do -- that's according to a great scoop from The Logic: thelogic.co/news/the-big...

But this is just one part of a broader story about Canada's tech bros deciding they want to play (right-wing) politics.

Let's talk about it:

If I were Canadian PM I would immediately:

1. Create a new $15B science fund

2. Offer any credentialed US scientist funding for lab startup and replacement of NIH grants if they move to Canada

3. Immediate permanent residency

4. Citizenship after 2 years

Overnight a science superpower

Reddit is banning links from X across various subreddits and that is how we win against the fascists.

Starve them of oxygen.

CONTEXT: This particular post is about the EO yesterday purporting to β€œend birthright citizenship.” Aside from being a valid constitutional right for over a century (1868 for the 14th amendment, 1898 for the SCOTUS ruling), it’s also how Kamala achieved citizenship. That’s not a coincidence.

Of the many anti-science aspects of Trump’s β€˜gender ideology extremism’ executive order, the funniest one is contained right here - according to this language, every one of us is female.

I really don't know what to say to anyone who still won't leave Twitter. The owner is literally doing Nazi salutes on stage. He's a Nazi. His web site is a Nazi web site. Like, is there any red line left he could cross where people would be like "All right, that really is too much"?

I saw that Liberal sources had told Global News they felt Trudeau had pulled the party β€œtoo far to the left” and they seemed to think that was the problem with his leadership

If that’s the takeaway the Liberals are going with, they are incredibly boned

But I keep seeing little things like, "To use iCloud on this mac you must accect the new T&C".

Said T&C look like:

Hopewell Rocks, NB

The Bay of Fundy's tides are particularly drastic, so when you visit the Rocks, go twice--once at high tide, and again at low tide to walk around on the ocean floor.

(I missed out on my Eastern Canada road trip, but I'll be back one day...)

Rhyme-as-reason effect - Wikipedia

People are more likely to believe a statement if it rhymes. I find this both devastating and adorable.

So about ten years ago I found a small network of bots on Reddit dedicated to spreading hate. The thing about it is that these weren't even responding to political topics - they were just responding to random keywords with insults and hate.

The same bots are now here. You should understand why. 🧡

Banning kids from certain social media platforms is like closing all the pools because some kids are drowning, then sending them to swim in the ocean. The real answer is teaching them how to swim safely and setting rules and having lifeguards. #SocialMediaBan #OnlineSafety #EducationNotBans

This seems like a really blunt tool to address an issue that comes down to a lack of regulation of tech giants, who have failed to invest in adequate moderation and prioritize engagement (and profit) above all.

The internet can be really dangerous. But it can also be a lifeline for vulnerable kids.

One thing I find interesting about the echo chamber complaint is that an echo chamber just won a presidential election.

Put aside the convo of whether it’s β€œgood” or β€œbad” for a moment. The far right has devoted enormous resources + time to building echo chambers & loathes spaces they don’t control
