does it need to update every minute?
ran into this today, dug into the logs so you don't have to - just don't quote me on this, ha!
wtaf microsoft: msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide...
notepad should deal with text files.
period.
end of story.
leave anything fancier to actual IDEs designed for that purpose and quit trying to make things do more than their primary function.
there should be laws requiring a d20 roll before replying on the internet
but hey, at least RAM's cheap right?
ah yes, nothing says "welcome back from a long weekend" like all 4 sticks of your RAM going bad (no, no fancy overclocking or anything here either)
i think at this point you could probably just auto-schedule this to get posted a minimum of every other day.
finally managed to track down what windows 24h2+ didn't like - it was a filter driver possibly dropped on by an old Adobe product - PxHlpa64.
why setup doesn't, you know, check for incompatible filter drivers first is beyond me, especially since there's no apparent logging at that point of boot.
well, i spoke too soon - 25h2 works fine, so long as i don't have AMD SVM enabled in the bios, good thing i'm not reliant on any kind of virtualization for what i do π€¦
2. My BIOS apparently needed to be updated - again, no useful information anywhere in logs/etc that would indicate it was having issues with mb or chipset components, but one random post in an asus forum had someone solve it, sure enough..
1. Starfield and Skyrim had been moved off my C: drive (by the Xbox app itself mind you) and another game completely uninstalled left file pointers in local\packages that it was choking on - only found in log files and fixed by good old fashioned "nuke and try"
... 1 month later ... finally managed to upgrade my machine from 23h2 to 25h2.
two ultimate problems were sabotaging the attempt, neither were solved by any information remotely from microsoft..
#win11 #upgrade #fail
notepad++ with only a single "new" tab open
behold my accomplishment this last weekend - i know you are jealous. we don't need to delve into what happened to new 1 thru 58 or whatever, or that it's full now of horizon log files, just enjoy how fast it opened for a minute..
Windows 11, version 25H2 is available. We couldn't install this updaet, you can try again (0x8024a22d)
<insert list of reasons here, all of them encountered..>
- Error overwriting component X
- Ancient drivers found for: y, z, a (remove prior to attempt)
- etc, etc, etc.
lay it out - don't just keep showing this and encourage repeating the same insanity over and over again.

..that when a major process fails like an upgrade, that all the problems encountered by setup along the way couldn't be documented in relatively plain english, or hell, even grouped together for presentation upon said failure:
"Windows could not install the upgrade due to the following:"

now obviously i'm stubborn, and will keep hitting against this until i fit that square peg into the round hole, but my point stands in that in an era where everyone is pushing AI, advanced analytics, and forcing upgrades, the process should not be this vague. there's zero reason..

it'd also be when i point out that during this latest attempt last night, i also managed to upgrade my MBP to tahoe in about 1/10th of the time it was just taking windows to update/rollback.. "why not just use the mac, rob?" - practical reasons like "i can't get blown up in space in elite"
(7 of ?)
(i should note that at this point of the upgrade, as the parent i would have thrown my hands up in frustration and shifted the conversation with my tech savvy kid over to topics like "why don't you come visit more" & "when are we getting grandkids" & "this is what hurts now")

took a day off to get some work done, tracked down some old pen drivers it seemed not to like and now i got a whole bunch of other error text including mention of an ADAM client and some new codes like 0x80070002, 0x80070490 and my new favorite 0x800401F0 (why? why not, it references win7)

yeah, well, one of these days all my games will get there - and there's still the rub that I have to support too many things reliant on windows
now we're up to a "Failed to merge telemetry file" 0x80070057 error in the rollback log.. pausing now since i have actual work to do..
(4 of ?)
error 1 was 0xc1900101, which points at memory integrity not being on, and ok, yeah there's some old dead drivers in there preventing it from turning on so i'll clean that up -- from the command line, because there's no mechanism offering to clean unused drivers up that mom could follow

let's think about this like i am not in the biz, or worse, trying to guide your elderly parent through this from across the country. yes, i know i should reinstall completely every so often, but i'm also, like most people, lazy when it comes to wanting to reinstall all my apps.

microsoft, you have a problem.
so yeah, i finally upgraded to win11 - got up to 23h2 just fine, but trying to further is an endless loop of "Windows 11, version 25H2 is available. - Download & Install"
sometimes there's an error code, sometimes not.
(more in thread)
#win11 #upgrade #euc
i miss the time when microsoft actually had whole departments who's only purpose was to test - patch tuesday this week breaks the Horizon Client, and apparently IIS, things that utilize localhost, aws vpn saml auth, AD on 2025.. π€¦ββοΈ just what i've seen so far #horizon #microsoft #fail
The Moon
there was a big moon last night - and i finally figured out how to line up my phone with my telescope..
The latest episode of Cloudy with a Chance of Desktops is up. Join the #Omnissa #TechInsiders as we discuss #OmnissaONE
if you missed it, @seanmassey.net is live, uh.. bluing? skying? posting - weβll go with that - the #omnissaone keynote..
