citizen legislative initiative, π―.
Officials, representatives, media, where are you on this? I'd hope you're appropriately concerned, ready to take the necessary steps on this major public health, safety, and quality-of-life problem, but so far not hearing you
bsky.app/profile/spok... #SHUTUPAct
Thereβs a big problem with people putting aftermarket LED bulbs in headlight assemblies built for halogen bulbs. Read Amazon reviews for a depressing number of examples. Itβs already illegal, but thereβs no penalty with teeth.
But itβs one of the biggest causes of blinding headlights.
Oh god this would make my life so much better
I will be advocating heavily for this billββor a version of itββduring the legislative offseason.
If you are a legislator in #waleg (or are running this fall!) and you are interested in introducing or sponsoring a version of it, please reach out!

"SHUT UP" Act, by the way, stands for the βSilencing Harmful and Unsafe Trucks, Unlawful exhaust, and Place-obscuring" Act.
5/6
Hereβs the concept bill text. My approach would modify existing statutes under Title 46 RCW.
4/6
Nuisance vehicle modifications and modified exhaust systems harm neighbors, endanger pedestrians and bicyclists, pollute our hair, and endanger public health.
Itβs long past time Washington take a harsh line against these destructive and antisocial vehicle modifications.
3/6
The bill would require offending vehicles to be impounded at the ownerβs expense until restored to factory condition.
It would also allow cities to install automated noise cameras, in line with the existing allowances for automated traffic enforcement. Noise camera fines would be $500-$1,000.
2/6
Introducing the SHUT UP Act, a bill that reduces harmful noise exposure and eliminates vehicle nuisances by making it a misdemanor to:
β modify your vehicle exhaust
β βroll coal"
β obstruct or cover your license plate
β excessively tint your windows
β use aftermarket LED headlights

Insane. Let's turbocharge highways and incentivize driving right as gas prices skyrocket. Make it make sense!
The net loss here is zero units (because all of the assemble-able sites already have development proposals or have recently redeveloped) and itβs not even within walking distance of a station.
I think if we just went back to pre-Bush DST, it would mostly resolve the issues people experience.
I feel like this debate exposes who are morning people and who are evening/night people! π
I think the big thing is we need to be comfortable adjusting hours of operation and school start times, regardless of which option we choose. They do that in Alaska, but it would be a big culture shift here.
Humans evolved to be awake when itβs light out and sleep when itβs dark! π
Framing is going to be *extremely* important!
To pass muster in the inevitable referendum campaign, it is extraordinarily important that advocates and #waleg frame this bill the right way.
This is not a new tax.
It is a tax cut for working families.
BREAKING: Washington is poised to pass historic tax relief for working families, small businesses, and consumers. Under this bill:
β 460,000 working families get lower taxes
β school meals will be free for all
β small businesses get lower B&O taxes
β sales tax no longer applies to diapers & tampons

Strait of Hormuz is gonna open back up ASAP.
*TRUMP WANTS IRAN'S 'UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER', RULES OUT DEAL
This is not good.
Why should bills be amended on the floor at all?
Maybe budget bills (MAYBE!) but not things that went through the policy committee process.
Would you then argue that Reform voters are being duped, and that Nigel Farage is (just) a charlatan?
Because I think many Americans would say in our analog, Trump voters only care about themselves and that Trump is actually evil...
Um, have you seen your Reform Party? π
And then you have the really vitriolic attacks on the Greens from all sides. Tommy Robinson getting platformed by Nigel Farage...
Opus can do some pretty amazing things.
I gave it some permit data and asked it to analyze recent declines in housing production as a result of higher interest rates.
It found that Seattle is missing 26,000 housing units as a result of slower production since 2022ββenough to reduce rents by 5-7%.
My bill to change commercial zoning to help local governments develop more housing has now passed the House and Senate with strong bipartisan support.β¨β¨We must address the housing shortage in our state. This bill will help provide more residential development opportunities in commercial areas.
What happens to state budgets when we rely too much on consultants and contractors with no incentive to economize? They grow! Sound Transit is a case study in this problem.
We need to build a stronger, more efficient state government that can do big things on its own!
And thereβs a nugget of truth in the desire to look at cutting budgetsβbecause we do spend too much for what we get.
But the solution is actually just to cut unnecessary process and bring more services in-house (especially at WSDOT). This would reduce our budget deficit and increase efficiency!
The forced annual local budget cut is gutting local government services like parks, libraries, housing, and economic development. It needs to end!
