Howl It is a rare and bracing thing to encounter an author who treats the reader’s approval with such magnificent indifference. Howard Jacobson has always been a sharp-eyed observer of the human condition, but in Howl, he has stripped away the performative layers to reveal something jagged and essential. This isn’t a book written to be liked; it is a book written because it had to be exhaled, a raw and cathartic scream that resonates with the terrifying frequency of a world turned upside down.

Broad Chalke Keith Hodgson shared these pics from his visit to the villages of the Chalke Valley (no that is not misspelt) including this nice map of Broad Chalke. "we were near Salisbury in the villages of Broad Chalke. We came across another hand drawn map by a local artist Jane Alyson Smart, www.janealysonsmart.co.uk, on a board in close to the shop, as well as a smaller version in the house where we stayed." The map below shows the Chalke Valley

I missed St Totteringham’s Day

I know it doesn’t mean what it used to when it comes so early in the season, but it is always a day that has a smile

Commissar D.V. Chernov has achieved that rare feat in historical fiction: taking a dense, often overlooked chapter of the past and transforming it into a high-octane spy thriller that never loses its groundedness. Set against the fractured landscape of 1917 Russia, Commissar plunges the reader into the chaotic aftermath of the Revolution, where the air is thick with the smoke of a looming civil war and the shadows of international conspiracy.

Witch Trial Witch Trial delivers a clever premise, but its execution is a relentless exercise in discomfort. Set against a chilling Edinburgh backdrop, the story follows the trial of two teens accused of murdering their best friend amidst whispers of occult rituals and toxic obsession. While Harriet Tyce is a master of tension, the narrative quickly descends into a space that is unnecessarily dark and deeply unpleasant.

Charlotte Robinson’s Mars One is the literary equivalent of a high-budget summer blockbuster: it’s sleek, loud, and moves so fast you barely have time to notice the plot holes until the credits roll. It’s an unashamed “hack novel” in the best sense of the word—efficient, hooky, and built for speed—but it operates in a reality that is frequently way outside the bounds of belief. The story juggles three colliding worlds: Alyssa Wright’s ill-fated one-way trip to the Red Planet, a frantic chase through the streets of Hong Kong involving a vanished coder, and a claustrophobic whodunit aboard the Argo spaceship. Robinson hits the ground running with the “one fatal mistake” hook and never really lets up, weaving in themes of corporate conspiracy and eco-terrorism that feel timely, even if they’re handled with a somewhat heavy hand. There is no denying that this book is action-packed with not much else. If you’re looking for a hard sci-fi technical manual or a deep psychological study on isolation, you’ve come to the wrong launchpad. The science is “movie science”—convenient, flashy, and highly improbable. However, Robinson’s prose has a certain fluid energy that makes the absurdity easy to swallow. The Hong Kong segments, in particular, feel like they were written with a Netflix or Prime Video adaptation in mind. You can practically see the neon reflections in the puddles and hear the synth-heavy soundtrack as the coder’s sister evades shadowy forces. It’s “popcorn” fiction that prioritizes the “wow” factor over the “how.” Mars One is a breathless thriller that succeeds as a piece of pure entertainment. While it leans heavily on tropes and asks for a massive suspension of disbelief, its sheer momentum keeps it from stalling. It’s a 3.5-star ride—perfect for a weekend read when you want to switch your brain off and just watch the stars (and the plot) explode.
