βYou keep using that word; I do not think it means what you think it means.β
I found out late last night that yesterday was Mark the Asceticβs commemoration. Kinda bummed I didnβt have time to read anything by him yesterday. Maybe today!
Okay. I take it back. Apparently the UBS GNT always comes with headings.
I still dislike them.
I did not spend over $50 on UBS6 to have to put up with English headings.
A map with descriptive text
Now the Bekaa valley. The IDF is ordering the forced evacuation of three towns in the Bekaa, east Lebanon
We now have all of south Lebanon, all of Dahieh and parts of the Bekaa
Map showing Dahieh in red and orange
The IDF just ordered the forced evacuation of *all of Dahieh* a day after ordering the forced evacuation of all of South Lebanon.
Israel is taking advantage of the focus on Iran to destroy Lebanon
Urgent warning to residents of southern Lebanon: Hezbollahβs terrorist activities are forcing the Defense Army to act against it with force. The Defense Army does not intend to harm you. For your safety, you must evacuate your homes immediately. Anyone who is near Hezbollah members, its facilities, or its weapons puts his life at risk. Any house used by Hezbollah for military purposes may become a target. To the residents of southern Lebanon, you must go right away to the north side of the Litani River to ensure your safetyβevacuate your homes immediately and move northward beyond the Litani River. Be aware that any movement southward will endanger your lives.
Quick translation of the IDF statement ordering all of south Lebanon's population to immediately leave.
Keep in mind that Israel has never stopped bombing south Lebanon since the 'ceasefire.' They are now taking the next step to destroy as much of the country as they can.
Israeli map showing all of southern Lebanon in red with yellow arrows pointing to north of the Litani river
The IDF just ordered the *entirety of south Lebanon* to be forcibly displaced.
They are emptying the land of its population, creating a massive crisis, and will now proceed to further annihilate large parts of Lebanon.
The very nation state of Lebanon is being destroyed.
Never mind an interlinear bible, get me a New Testament in the RSV with Greek text facing from the left-hand side.
Canβt un-see/un-hear it.
I guess I have a reasonable, yet strong opinion that all hardcover books should come with a ribbon marker. Especially non-fiction.
Dumbarton Oaks are also published by HUP, no? Those have ribbon bookmarks and cost . . . <checks notes> . . . *EXACTLY THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY* as Loeb volumes. Theyβre also on nicer paper. What gives???
@poetinbabylon.bsky.social
Donβt you suppose that Harvard could have invested an extra dollar to have a bookmark-ribbon sold on every Loeb volume? I appreciate the dust jackets but dislike feeling the need to use them as bookmarks.
Sitting down to read some second-century texts. Donβt mind if I do. Let the enjoyment commence β /otium sanctum/.
Oh I didnβt mean to suggest anything like that. Just trying to send positive, empathetic thoughts your way.

Donβt mind if we do
I should probably take a look at Thomas P. Scheckβs _Origen and the History of Justification_.
I have a hunch that really what could be happening is that Iβm focusing on a more Johannine element and Calvinβs language of decree might be more Pauline (Γ la Romans 9-11).
Anyways, this reading (or maybe mis*reading) of Ξ»ΟΞ³ΞΏΞΉ led me to the question of whether Origenβs theory of eternal divine purpose for humanity and creation might correspond at all with Calvinβs use of the language of decree.
[A little bit (song and dance) wherein the church fathers pull a Rick Warren] π€π
So Maximus the Confessor will discuss how it is proper to the human being to contemplate the Ξ»ΟΞ³ΞΏΟ Ο of creation, and virtue consists in proper use while evil is improper use or misdirected use. Passion (Οάθη) being the misdirection of the will.
I must admit I am not an expert linguist to claim to have a tight grasp on how each father uses his words. However, to paint with quite a broad stroke, I would say βΞ»ΟΞ³ΞΏΟβ seems to me to read not merely as βreasonβ but also as βprinciple governing oneβs purpose,β hence βreason.β
As I recall, upon reading Origen, it was my impression that he thought the Ξ»ΟΞ³ΞΏΞΉ of all souls/creation to have had their beginning in God (God having no such beginning). And I do not think the subsequent Origenian tradition necessarily reads the preexistence of souls into Origen.
Okay, @poetinbabylon.bsky.social, here goes nothing.
Origen is often suspected to have believed in the βpreexistence of souls.β I cannot attempt to prove otherwise, however my reading of Origen in Ξ Ξ΅ΟΞ― ΞΟΟΟΞ½ is a bit more cautious. I am not sure describes human souls as co-eternal with God.
