I want to naively believe that tech can make people’s lives unequivocally better but the people who make tech seem to want nothing more than to prove me, specifically, wrong.
Google is just a fucking search engine. But, along w/ Facebook and “pivot to video,” it’s also been the basis for how the online media industry gets paid for like two decades now and shit’s been collapsing in that regard for years. And then there’s all the other shit google has muscled its way into
Microsoft Azure is, at base, cloud computing and business management infrastructure. It’s so mundane you wouldn’t think twice about it; my dayjob uses it to gate access to our SOPs. It’s also been being used to surveil and oppress Palestinians for years. Someone should be held accountable for this.
And the techbro answer to this seems to always be "well, tech is value-neutral, it's not the tech that's bad it's the user," but like, what about the maker? What if the technologist is responsible for making the tech do evil shit, and why are they never held accountable for it?
The worst part of the last decade or so is that technology has been so misused and twisted into harmful configurations that the only correct way to deal with it most of the time is to distrust it. there's no tech out there that is purely good or incapable of being made to carry out bad ends.
