I wish to acknowledge and honor the Mvskoke (or Creek) people, who lived, worked, produced knowledge on, and nurtured the ancestral homeland that this stadium is built upon. I invite you to join me in acknowledging the Mvskoke, their elders past and present, as well as future generations. A quick history lesson: President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830 to seize land acquired through coerced treaties, after decades of working to displace native people. In 1832, when the Supreme Court ruled that Native Nations had sovereignty in Worcester vs Georgia, Jackson refused to enforce their ruling. In 1836, the federal government drove the last Mvskoke from their land in Georgia and Alabama. 3,500 of the 15,000 Mvskoke who set out for Oklahoma did not survive the trip. Today, we call this journey "The Trail of Tears."

By acknowledging this history while standing just a few feet from the Chatahoochee River- (or "Painted Rocks" in Mvskoke), in a gathering place where people use caricature gestures and chants to cheer for their sports team as part of a "tradition" all of 30 years old, I hope to help us consider something important about context: we don't all share it, and what we choose to ignore says as much about our values as what we choose to pay attention to.
