We recently visited Paris to meet French academics, parliamentary and government officials to learn about how the @assembleenationale.bsky.social's voting procedures and Written Parliamentary Questions system compare with the Commons.

Thanks to the Assembly staff and British Embassy for hosting us.

β€œThose who followed the select committee chair elections at the start of the 2024 Parliament will recall I stood on a platform to prevent another "Select Committee Chair silly season”, following growing frustration among MPs about the excessive canvassing we experience and barrage of campaign literature we receive.
Our report published today makes recommendations to curb this, calling for a campaign period of 14 days or less and prohibiting the production of printed campaign materials. We have also suggested small changes around the timing of Deputy Speaker and select committee chair elections so that new MPs have time to better familiarise themselves with candidates."

"The flexibility of House of Commons business reassures constituents that they can rely on their MP to perform Parliament's core scrutiny function by holding the Government to account in a timely and effective way. However, this does undoubtedly make it challenging to predict the start time and duration of individual business items.

Call lists in isolation will not have the desired impact that has been envisaged. The Committee believes they could have a knock-on effect on dynamic debate on emerging topics of national importance, and on the powers of the Chair in managing the flow of debates."
