πŸ’― I got the new Alien starter set and much prefer the design to the old edition (i.e. it's white paper with dark text so you can read it without getting a headache) but the gloss covers feel super cheap (& they fit the box EXACTLY which makes them impossible to get out unless you tip it upside down)

... by the end of the converstation, with little googling, we'd identified the university and the woman who'd been passed over to coach the rowing team despite being the most qualified candidate.

At a crowded airport in France last year we sat next to a man having a long phone converstation in which he detailed and attempted to justify disciminatory hiring practices at a top university's sports department...

that's my experience too, either selling for cheap via ebay etc. or selling them to a comic shop where they'll be able to sell them on at "market value", you get about the same as undercutting on ebay but you can sell in bulk more easily and the hassle factor is 100 times lower.

Not the first or the last time I would thank whoever chose the CDs for the Cheshire library service for steering me right.

I got this out from the library age 15 because I guessed from the title it was going to be metal. My first listen I thought it was terrible, needless to say by the time I had to return it I was a convert.

Masala Noir - Graphic Design Books & Visual Archives | Paris Masala Noir curated collection: graphic design books, visual archives, and cultural publications.

Presume you're familiar with Masala Noir? I spend a good 10-20 mins each and every day resisting the urge to buy a stack of their books for exactly this reason (cheaper & more convenient than eBay auctions)

Much more coffee grown in the Australian deserts than I imaginedπŸ€”

Highly recommended! I got it at the tail end of last year and have played it loads, very easy to get to the table (simple to teach, consistently under 45 mins) and it has a lovely dramatic arc as over the rounds the focus of the scoring moves towards Kyoto.

Related question: Are area majority games actually auction games where the auctions run in parallel?

Conversely it's harder to hide the value of three individual troop counters when you play them where with a card you can just play it face down.

10.02.2026 13:42 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

eg If a card has a value of 3 it's hard to then split that into individual units whereas in Joraku whilst you place 3 troops together you can later shift them around individually (because they individual bits of wood)...

Great food for thought! I was thinking along similar lines when I was playing Joraku recently. Different physical formats are definitely more readily able to explore different aspects...

I've had that on my list for the better part of a decade, probably time to give it a shot

4 low toner A4 printouts taped together t make a map of Cuba. There are some board game pieces on top.

Had a bit of time to work on this over the last couple of days. More or less works from a layout point of view though I'm going to shift the borders of La Habana province (as I've noticed they do on the original board) as things a re bit tight even if I scale up the map a bit.

I saw a pretty prominent RPG designer on here suggesting that rolling 2d6 was the same as rolling a d12 a while back and no one picked them up on it 😒

I've more or less got used to the excessive corner radius and glitchy transparency effects but the menu icon overload is a constant impediment to getting stuff done.

My fave album that I expect might not make it is Tomahawk by Tomahawk (Think it's safe to assume that Weedeater's And Justice For Y'All is not login to make the cut)

I mean, even when there were no other options I found it unwatchable. Every so often I peek under the rock out of curiosity and aside from more expensive cameras and lighting none of them seem to have got any better at thinking critically about games. truly baffling.

I'm doing the same! I chose a different desk than usual and the light's are more stubborn from this position. Normally I can just wave but I'm having to stand up today.

I haven't seen Maximum Overdrive for a good 30 years so my theory is based purely on vibes rather than a close reading of the text. A fun film though

my theory is that those films are all set in the far future of the film Maximum Overdrive (1986)

yeah, totally, I've already spent my money on minis, I can get a whole new game for Β£15! And crucially I can easily get it to the table, at least once or twice, I only need one other person, and not a repeat commitment.

If you're buying Β£100 of miniatures Β£15 on rules isn't that big a deal?
