The phases are 1) pencil sketch, 2) inked and colored high-res, 3) raw downscale to 64x80 with artifacting, 4) pixel art touchup to remove blemishes from the downscale & increase clarity.
This is my process for the Xenogears-style portraits in the game. As you can see, my drawing skills are nothing special, and countless artists could do this phase quicker & better. The downscaling & pixel art phase actually hides some of my own limitations. #jrpg #pixelart #indiedev #gameart

I 100% second this recommendation - I think Geo Mythica is fantastic (battles are like an NES version of the FFVII Remake mixing action with menu commands, and the 8-bit recreation of Earth as a World Map is exceptional) 😄

I started a mockup for a Samurai Pizza Cats game a few years back, got a little ways into the background and stopped. Picked it up again and drilled away at it. I had the old version and a WIP of the revision saved so I've uploaded those as well.
