That's probably part of the issue too, a lack of knowledge keeps new game developers from optimizing and turning off uneccesary aspects of the default engine they're using.

The likely reason for doing it that way is so that the game can be ran at multiple resolutions and aspect ratios without issues. Chances are these games just run poorly because a lack of optimisations...
