We are currently outside the ICE Broadview concentration camp where Sunny Naqvi’s family believes her to be held after being detained in O’Hare by federal authorities.
I do think about that. He galvanized a lot of people. I don’t know the stats but as usual—-the people that raise a lot of objections when they are galvanized. It scares the rich, scares racists and so on. He was way ahead of his time.
He could have compromised, angled his way, played the game more (though someone with his commitments perhaps isn’t trusted by the powerful). But he kept faith with what he believed. I hope people won’t be afraid to be like him even when they know it’s not rewarded. Everything is designed to tilt us.
He didn’t waver. He showed up. There aren’t many people who always SHOWED UP like Jesse Jackson. All the politicians speaking at his funeral were more ‘successful‘ in getting power but not greater than he. He was a great man who did not get much power BECAUSE he was also good. And the world is not.
Jesse Jackson wasn’t wrong about many things. He‘s probably been right about more things than any other political figure of the last 50 years—and present for those things. And he got a tsuami of shit for it from the powerful. He was right and everyone said shhhhh. Or that’s my recollection.
We must continue to do the work and honor Reverend Jesse Jackson. We can’t lose faith but we must continue to keep hope alive!
It makes one’s heart heavy to read the memories of survivors. One man who wrote about Auschwitz would see the Nazis happily tending their gardens. There are many reasons people believe in hell but of course one is that people want justice because there is not much justice in this life.
We have a friend who is a Holocaust survivor. 100 years old. Beautiful to see she had a good life after all that—that one can. But no comeuppance for most of betrayers of humanity. The Nazi she still talks about—she is happy this person ended up with a terrible goiter. That’s all that happened.
