THE ONLY LIVING PICKPOCKET IN NEW YORK is a lovely little movie that gives John Turturro a great leading role. www.vulture.com/article/revi...
The Contender. I hated it SO MUCH. I was so furious when I left the theater I picked a fight with my poor unsuspecting date. It filled me with such intense RAGE AND ANGER. This article sums it up - although I didn't need 20 years to see that it is absolute nonsense. www.nytimes.com/2021/09/08/m...
My driverβs ed teacher was also the town cop - so kids were pulled over by the same guy who taught them to drive. Small town New Hampshire for the win!
One thing you see in both the smug dope from the Plain Dealer and the Cruise/Pitt clip is profound resentment at the idea that creative work is a skill with human variables--experience, instinct, practice, imagination. There is real anger at the very idea that non-technological human talent matters.
This is perhaps the best explanation of why AI is not always a better way to do something (anything!) - it skips the thinking part. We need to THINK to get from the start to the finish of something. Thinking is what makes life interesting.

It me.
Of note, though I'm not sure exactly how to note it: all of the Oscar nominees for Best Documentary Feature premiered at Sundance last year.
While I wonβt need to worry about accidentally writing β2025β on my checks, as I no longer write checks, I will have to worry about mis-dating my sequences in Avid

For the New York Times, I wrote about the creative implications of the potential Netflix/WBD deal, and why I hope Netflix learns more from HBO than HBO learns from Netflix (gift link): www.nytimes.com/2025/12/31/o...
Finally caught up with PETER HUJAR'S DAY. Among its many small, exquisitely proportioned pleasures, it's a great movie about the life of a freelancer. Lotta talk about rates and stretches that didn't feel all that productive.
She has it in the bag.
Transparent is to blame for this :)

Iβm sorry to keep harping on this but after the iOS update closing a tab in safari takes three steps instead of one. really sterling work guys
You know who doesn't make mistakes like this? Human editors who have been cutting recaps for decades! Imagine that!
For @prospect.org, I wrote about SINNERS as the movie of 2025 (not necessarily the best, but certainly the one that best fused popularity and acclaim) and why Hollywood treated its success like a threat. prospect.org/2025/12/11/s...
We hope this makes you happy, Carol.

Mad Men 4K
UPDATE: This actually wasn't HBO Max's fault.
Source tells me incorrect files were delivered to HBO Max. Lionsgate is working on getting them the right files now and those corrected files will be posted as soon as possible.

My questions about this as the morning progresses:
1) Who will be the first to find the vomit hose guy for an interview?
2) Who will be the person who finds the body of the person who approved the 4K restorations after Matthew Weiner murders them?
The original ep was widescreen and the hose guy is gone, so itβs not a 4x3 vs 16x9 issue. Its a VFX shot that didnβt get cut into the 4K version. m.youtube.com/watch?v=qvRH...
Trying to guess how this happenedβ¦back when we shot TV on film we would have to deliver negative cut lists even though we didnβt finish on film. So maybe this episode didnβt have the final VFX in that list? And no one checked their work after they rescanned the neg for 4K?
lauren @NotABigJerk For everyone visiting their parents this week: LG tvs call it TrueMotion Roku/TCL calls it Action Smoothing Samsung calls it Auto Motion Plus Sony calls it MotionFlow Panasonic calls it Intelligent Frame Creation Amazon Fire TVs call it Motion Processing 12/25/22

A letter of support for editor Olivier Bugge CouttΓ© from Joachim Trier
I love this gesture so much that I will accept the wasteful mailing of this standard def DVD even though I would never do this film the injustice of watching it that way. Bravo Joachim Trier.
Dang!! Iβve never seen anything like this. Hats off to them both.
