You don’t think they’d report on the boat explosion that seemingly killed the suspect of the high profile kidnapping AND participant of those gun battles?

Public service announcement that The Fall Guy (2024) is now available on Netflix UK. If you've not seen it before, it's a fantastic action comedy, woefully underappreciated at the time of release.

This was met with DEATHLY silence, then one of the other men replied "That's... the baby?" & all the others nodded, with concerned looks on their faces.

We're all good friends now but they confirmed that, at that point, they ALL thought I was thick as shit 💀

At our very first NCT session, they separated us into Dads & Mums (to be), then asked the "Dads" to list "all the ways our partner's bodies had changed". Not only was this an AWFUL idea, I turned to the group & said "I don't know what it is but there's a definite swelling around the abdomen...?"

"you need to learn how to use gAI or you'll get left behind!"

counterpoint!

the absolute fastest way to render yourself unemployable is to build your skillset around a tool that does your thinking for you, that everyone has access to, and that one company can change or take away at any time

Whenever I see an ocean of laurels on someone's film poster, I zoom in and 9 times out of 10 they read like Lional Hutz's academic credentials.

[We see a close up of a young white male, tanned, white teeth, coiffed hair clearly an influencer on social media. It is an image such as you see when social media posts are shown on the news. In the corner of the screen is named a location: DUBAI. He is staring slightly off-camera for several silent panels of the comic strip. His eyes move slightly. He is having a thought.]

From off-screen a newsreader’s commentary comes:

NEWSREADER:

Extraordinary images here

of an expat in Dubai

[The influencer’s eybrows raise slightly]

…Having their first ever geopolitical thought.

[CUT TO a BBC news scene. The BBC newsreader CLIVE MYRIE is talking to an interviewee next to the screen showing the social media influencer’s face. The interviewee’s name is David Jones].

CLIVE MYRIE:

To explain the significance of this moment we’re joined by David Jones, our Expat Thoughts correspondent

DAVID JONES:

Clive, this is momentous

It was caught on film at the end of an Instagram post titled: ‘Dubai Is Brilliant’.

[Pointing at the screen, the influencer’s expression still the same]

You can clearly see in the eyebrows here, the dawning realisation that there *might* be something in the world beyond his dickhead self.

It marks a *huge* departure from all the Dubai Expat’s previous thoughts.

CLIVE MYRIE:

Which are…?

DAVID JONES:

You've Got To Get Yourself Out Here Mate, Everything Is So Clean, I Don't Have To Pay Taxes,
I Am Incurious As To Why I Do Not Have To Pay Taxes, and Spa.

CLIVE MYRIE:

And might we see an expansion of these new Thoughts in coming days?

DAVID JONES:

I think we can expect to see:

“I Deserve To Be Airlifted By A Country I Pay No Tax To”

CLIVE MYRIE:

Mmm.

[Ends]

Ultimately, if a festival wants you to submit your film, they will not charge you anything for your submission.

The scam ones WILL almost certainly get you a laurel and a physical trophy but I imagine they are, in some way, Cursed Objects.

04.03.2026 13:15 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

The flipside to this is that the entire festival circuit is rife with scams. "Festivals" that hold monthly screenings and/or have 100+ categories. These will pander to your ego but ALWAYS want money. Often under the guise of a "60% discount just for you!". Avoid like the plague.

04.03.2026 13:11 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0

Another unexpected factor was just how many festivals have reached out to me directly, either after they attended a screening themselves or from word of mouth.

There's still no gaurantee they'll select your film of course but it's nice to be approached like this.

04.03.2026 13:11 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Also, if 99 total festivals seems like a lot, it is! I didn't plan to submit to that many. I had a list of maybe 40 total? But the more festivals I attend the more I've discovered. The whole thing has been a learning experience.

04.03.2026 12:38 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

I would also say that of those festivals I've attended, those that have free/very cheap submissions have been the best. In Europe, this is often because they have excellent funding. Many of the free ones are HUGE.

FREE OR <$12 = 60 (61%)
FREE OR <$12 (ACCEPTED) = 23 (59%)

FREE OR <$12 = 60 (61%) FREE OR <$12 (ACCEPTED) = 23 (59%)

And another important set of data! The majority of the festivals I submitted to were either free or less than $12 USD (I'm using USD purely because it's the default for a lot of festival submissions) and of the festivals DUCKS got into, these account for almost 60%.

A screenshot from Excel. The cell data reads:

FESTIVAL SUBMISSIONS = 99
APPROACHED BY = 23 (23%)
HEARD BACK FROM = 76 (77%)
ACCEPTED = 39 (51%)
REJECTED = 37 (49%)
WAITING TO HEAR BACK = 23 (23%)

For any numbers fans, here's some festival stats to date

Honestly, every time DUCKS gets an official festival selection, I swear out loud with shock and joy.

From sitting in front of a computer for months, to seeing the results with an audience is an indescribable feeling.

I wish I could attend them all 🥲

...because of COURSE they can pay you now! They have lots of money! It has no negative effect on your relationship with the people who hired you (or shouldn't in a large corporation) BUT putting that onus on vendors to chase payment is AWFUL, yet a standard practise. Hate it.

04.03.2026 09:03 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

I hate this bullshit dance from lage corporations SO much. The worst thing is, if you have the stones to call the accounts department and check in on your payment status every morning for a week, they will pay you VERY quickly....

P1: A Corgi bounces along like a stupid idiot

P2: slams their idiot head --body-- into the ground. Smoosh.

P3: the idiot flies up into the air

P4: and keeps going, leaving even the mountains themselves behind like they're nothing. That idiot will go further than any of us, as they embrace the very heavens.
