Just got Math Decoded by James Tanton and I'm so happy. ๐โจ
It's pure Jamesโaccessible, joyful, with colorful sketches that are exactly what you need, right when you need them.
You can hear his voice on every page, kapows and all. So, so good.

When airlines use "minutes" to describe the delay.
That's what I'm saying!
:))
I can't afford first class, but I prefer the exit row for my long legs. And when the flight attendant asks, "Are you willing and able to perform emergency duties...," I respond with a firm yes.
This is a lie. My yes just means that I'm ready to die with the rest of y'all.
I mean is bay leaf the appendix of cooking? What does it do?
I've been making a lot of soups lately.
Has anyone done a blind taste test (like Pepsi vs Coke) to pick out the soup cooked with bay leaf vs. one without?
The one I linked to was the start of it - the spark to continue.
Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope your winter break is just around the corner, and a good book ๐ or hot beverage โ is in your near future.

A4 Most recent re-learning was at NCTM and @fawnnguyen.substack.com session using Visual Patterns. I have been working with teachers and after my session of using Visual Patterns they all wanted www.visualpatterns.org and more on making connections. โค๏ธ Spreading the love of #Mathing.
Happy Friday!
Finally had time to writeโlatest post on having students create the questions: fawnnguyen.substack.com/p/when-stude...
It was an amazing experience. Your care, compassion, and sense of humor made the experience so memorable. Thank you!
Q1: Iโd ask the student to explain their solution (the graph) in words. Hopefully, by saying it out loud, theyโll notice the numbering.
Q2: Can you test a couple of numbers in the region you shaded to see if they work?
Q3: I see that you have โ3 as a solution. Please check that.
Etc.
Wonderful to meet you, Ryan. Thank you again for being there with me.

A 5th way to see the pattern
Another example (thatโs more complicated)
These are just warm ups- the key is SEEING the patterns visually

Don had such an amazing eye for a rich problem, that he always then turned into a rich, connected set of problems.
